Our A4 avant purchased in March had the Air Bag warning light go on and stay on too. When my wife brought it into the dealer, the dealer rep. looked at the car and fiddled with the ignition surreptitiously, though they tried not to be seen doing that, my wife doesn't miss much and saw this. Later she asked me what the dealers might have been trying to do. Could there be an unreported problem with the ignition switch and airbags that they want to keep quiet? I might add that the dealer was at first reluctant to accept the car (with 2.5 years left in the warranty) right away, but after initial hesitation eventually did, presumably because of the liability issue regarding safety equipment.
I hope this is a minor inconvenience and repaired quickly, since the loaner they gave us is a horrible pig of an SUV (Mitsubishi Montero) and I hate it.
