View Full Version : Have you guys noticed this right after pumping gas...

o.k., it happens everytime I pump gas.
The car seems be strained, it does not want to go, almost like it's about to stall.
When I push on the gas, it goes and then it sort of cathes its breath and tries again to go...
This happens everytime I pump gas for a few miles there after...then it's back to normal.
I put EXXON 93.

First I was thinking it had to do with the pressurized gas tank, then maybe I've come across some bad gas.. but it goes away after a few miles of driving..
any thoughts..

Thanks

The same exact thing happend to me! I just pumped a full tank in.....(car was not running)
The highway is about 1 mile away & I had to beat a dump truck (love those flying rocks!) & the car would not respond. Kinda like it was skipping. I will mention at next service, but if they can not duplicate the problem...they can not fix. Audi service NEVER goes by your word. They must replicate. Please post any answers to the wierd problem. I had thought that it was my chip, but it turns out that it was not.

I thought that it was my car....

Does it ever happen after a "hot restart", without pumping any gas?

I know exactly what you're talking about. Right after I fill up my tank and accelerate out onto the road, I'll feel a lagging and the acceleration stops, almost kinda skips, for a brief moment. It feels very much like the car is trying to catch its breath to accelerate. I have always assumed it has something to do with gas tank pressure. It only happens right after I've filled up the tank.

i noticed this after i installed the garrett chip.. i then took out the chip and put my stock chip back in.. still does it..

It never happens during at hot start, only when I fill up...
you know, come to think of it, it only happens when I fill up the tank. I say that because I only had 5 dollars cash with me this past week and I pumped gas that got me to the half way mark and no hesitation upon accelerating...
I'll bring it up to my service rep. when my first service sneaks up on me, I'm only at 1700 miles.

more comments please....

With this info, we can look for patterns to the problem. So far the following people have noticed it:

Andy 99 2.8 QMS
Roger 99 1.8T QMS
brian W 99 1.8T QM
ChrisD ??

I wonder if any non-quattro cars have had this problem?

I have not noticed the problem as described.

Over-filling may be your problem? I don't know...but you mentioned that @ 1/2 tank mark, you had no problem. Hmm... check and make sure you are not overfilling.

My yellow check light went off today...I called Audi Roadside Assistance for info about if i should still drive me car, etc and they said that since it was ON and not blinking ON and OFF, then that it could be a number of things. They think it was air in my gas tank..they said it's common when filling up gas...they said if it doesn't go off next time i start my car after driving it for a while then see my dealer tomorrow when they open. but if it does go of then it is infact air in the gas tank and the car just has to "pass" it out..like a fart =)...anyways, it did in fact turn off. has this happened to anyone else? should i still see my dealer tomorrow?
Thanks,
Jason

thanks Sean!
Gosh! wouldn't that be dangerous, a farting A4, especially at a gas station...;). that could complicate things...

I never over fill. I wait for the pump to stop automatically. It seems to happen when I fill my tank with 1/4 or less in the tank.

This might be it???

Maybe it is a quattro thing? We all know that the gas tank is an upside down U shape. Maybe the tank has not equalized the presure on both sides?? I do notice this --> When I remove my gas cap, presure is released. I think that this is normal (has happened on all of my other non Audi cars) But maybe this might be it? A presure problem? It only happens when I NEED the extra umph to get on the highway. BTW I use Amoco 93.
Seems like it happens to MY 1999 so far with Q.

Does that make sense to anyone?
Comments?

I am chiped (Wett) - Is anyone else chipped?

Gotta love A4.org! Such a wonderful resource!

Alas on a problem like this I can see where they would have to duplicate it, otherwise they would have no idea where to look (I know I don't, but I would start by monitoring the fuel pressure after the fill) and any work would just be "shotgun".

everything that you've mentioned is valid, I have pumped when I have 1/4 or less left in the tank, it's got to be some kinda of hocus-pocus from Audi Engineers.
Next time I'll wait 'till I have 1/2 tank and fill up and see if the hesitation is there. If not, I'll take it down a noth next time I fill up untill the car wants to pass gas and then we'll be right on the money...
I'm going to continue this experienment and keep posting on it.

thanks to everyone!!

While filling the tank, I wait for the pump nozzle to "trip" off. I can then put one additional gallon in the tank (none ever spills out, but it does take a lot of nursing). This is the only way I can get my gas gauge to register all the way to full. I guess my evap purge canister check-valve is in good shape... car drives completely normal after my "special" fill up.

It happened to me again last night. I never top it up. I use Texaco 92. I have about 7k on my car.

There are two things I notice. First, I get the check engine indicator when my tank is near empty and no indicator when the tank is full. I have an appointment with the dealer just after Thanksgiving. Second, if I put in the clutch while having this 'problem' the rpms drop to 2000 and either stay there or slowly decay down to about 1000rpm.

He has seen this and similar situations numerous times. If this does not work then visit your dealer. I have never had this issue.

I think this is a case of vapor lock but I've never heard of this with a fuel injected car. It used to happen with carberators but I thought the high fuel pressure for fuel injection prevented it.

Sorry to be the hypothesis buster, but I experience the problem and do *not* have a Quattro. Mine is a 98.5 2.8MS. FWIW, this problem only occurs when I completely fill up the tank after it's been close to empty (i.e. usually 20-30 miles after fuel warning light comes on). I never "top off", but quit after the pump clicks off. I notice a "whoosh" of air escaping as I undo the gas cap --it seems there is reverse pressure built up in the tank. Also, I never turn the cap past one "click" when replacing it. I'll try three clicks next time as recommended here and see if that makes a difference (maybe a tighter seal on the cap).

It's weird, but the problem only seems to happen under the exact circumstances described above. It never occurs when I'm just adding a few gallons or when the tank has not been completely empty. The problem seems to go away for me after a very short while, rarely more than 2 miles.

Thaks to all for the input. A4 is a *great* source of info.
