Just borrowed my friend's 99 Honda Civic brochure. There will have a high-powered Civic DOHC VTEC enters our market in early 99. This is the same high performance Civic that's on sale in Asian and Austrailan markets for a couple of years. Judging by Civic's usually light weight (is that the common way Honda/Acura used to made FAST cars?), this Civic probably could outrun those of us's 1.8T Quattro version easily. There's also a rumors that the Type-R Civic will enters our market. Come on, Audi!! Imports the blast S3 to let us blow all of them away in a traffic lights racing!!
No flames please
Tom
97 A4 1.8TQM
PS: the version is called SIR Civic coupe with 160 horsepower Double Overhead Cam VTEC (other Civics are SOHC VTEC). The only appearance differences are the DOHC VTEC badges on the side, SIR badge at the rear and aluminum alloy wheels.

Tom
Please don't take this message as a flame but I would like to know what is your criteria for your A4 having to "beat" other cars?
A4 must "beat" ;
1. Any car lighter than A4 ?
2. Any car that costs less than A4 ?
3. Any comparible or smaller size car ?
4. Any car that you have owned before ?
5. Any Japanese cars ? (epecially Hondas)
6. Any car that you considered before you bought your A4 ?
Obviously, you are not wishing to beat a Porshe. So what make you happy?

Any cars that's cheaper than our A4s, especially those cheap econoboxes. I simply have to many experiences that a hatchback Civic or Escort beat my 1.8TQM on a traffic light on a sunny day. I respected many Japanese products, especially those from Lexus/Toyota. I will not race againist any cars that's more powerful than an A4, M roadster Bimmer, for instance because its definitely more powerful than my car. I will only race those more powerful cars (especially those RWDs) on rainy days. The car that I considered before my A4 purchase (VW Jetta VR6) is definitely quicker than my non-chipped 1.8T, but I prefer my A4 over any other cars on the road (including the E46 323/328) because of its wonderful blend of safety, comfort, luxury and performance.
Tom
97 A4 1.8TQM

The fun is in racing cars that are more powerful with drivers that have no clue how to drive. Yeah 0-60 races are fun but don't take much talent. Shocking a 328 or a Mustang GT on the highway while they're in 5th and you're in 3rd is when the fun starts. Or try taking a Maxima or Volvo on the twisties is what the A4 is about. Have fun. Don't aim for mediocrity you drive an A4!!!

Don't worry about it. The A4Q is a much more stable car than a honda. A quattro will keep you safe at times you don't even realize it, especially if you have had some training. Your A4 can stay planted when others are headed for the ditch. German cars are tuned for top speed on the Autobahn and not for drag racing. German cars have there horses and torque at the top of the rpm band and not a the bottom. I was in a new 5 series on the Autobahn doing 142 just 2 weeks ago. What was amazing is the fact that the 5 only had a 2 liter inline 6 in it. That car really pulled when the revs started to build. Your 1.8T would be the same if you could drive on an unlimited road.

Maybe your's, but not mine!

Some guy in an Acura Integra GSR thought he was the man until I ate him alive. It is the driver not the car.
99 1.8TQMS
Soon to be Wett

an A4 must beat those fake Civic "race cars" which are in fact DX (lowest model) without the VTEC engine. Those fake ones usually have the badges removed, cars lowered, absurdly large alloy rims and a Pepsi can exhaust tip.
Wong from North
98 A4 1.8TqMS Tropic Green

One of the main reason's I sold my Honda Civic is that it was too much of a lightweight flimsy car! I wanted a heavy, solid car where the doors thud not 'klink'!
Yesterday and today we have been experiencing 50-60mph gale force winds in SE Mich. In past, my lightweight Hondas were thrown almost off the road by these winds. I still feel the force of the wind in my heavy quattro but I can keep control of the car and feel secure with it's heavy, solid build quality.
Yes, I'd like a faster car but any tin box lightweight that thinks they are a better car just because they have a better weight to HP ratio and can (maybe) beat me off the line is really a fool.
-C.

If your ego is at stake at every stoplight, go get a Ford Mustang SVT Cobra... It retails somewhere between the price of a well-equipped A4 1.8T and a basic A4 2.8. Then you should have no worries from cars that cost less than yours. But then again that Hyundai next to you might have a bottle of NOx in the trunk... then what are you going to do? There'll always be somebody faster than you... I've accepted it, thats why I bought an A4. It provides me just the right balance of driving pleasure, refinement, and utility for the money. Think about it.
Kosta
