I'm convinced it is the way to go. I kmow that they are expensive - but not too much strain on the engine. All the mechanics I've spoken to say that the stock cams have bad transitions (so the flat spots) and the engine is designed to pull low down. I would gladly sacrafice that for more top end.
GK
1998.5 2.8 30v Q 5spd

We made a support piece for each side of the subframe to beef up
the area that was having damage on those cars with aftermarket
sway bars. I will take a picture and post my solution this weekend
if possible. It was welded in...not bolted.
Just call me quick draw...McGraw...
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

A few questions:
1) What do the cams do? I've seen mention of them in many a magazine but never figured out what they do, or how they do it.
2) Does it noticably affect performace?

Thanks!
Warren
Cams are what actuate the valves. By changing the lobe of the cam (cam profile) you can change when the valves open, how long they are open, an when they close. You can have a profile that is optimized for higher RPM operations, or for lower RPM operations. Depending on the profile, the personality of the car can change dramatically (one of the reasons why those hot-rodded V8 sound like they do at idle).
Generalize explanation, I'm sure someone will expand upon this if you want more detail.
HTH
Bert

Cool...thanks. This is about what I surmised looking at pics of the cams and having a general idea where they go in the car, but wasn't absolutely sure.
Warren

They add a very slightly lumpy idle, but the part throttle response is much sharper and the midrange punch from 3 -5 k rpm is much more noticable. Useful top end power is extended by about 500 rpm to just over 6k rpm, small size of stock turbo remains limitig factor there. A revised chip (more boost, more fuel, less spark) is also in there, both chip and cams come from CDupre Motorsports in Germany and were installed by dealer here in Australia as he imports them. Rated at 155kw (211hp) and 280Nm (205ftlbs). I also have a 3 inch cat back hi flow stainless exhaust system with 3 inch mufflers and this system works very well.
Graham 1.8TqM Sydney Oz
