I went to Clair today and put some money down to hold a car that I fell in love with the moment I saw it - light silver metallic, 1.8t, stick, quattro, loaded. I kinda got jipped because I made a mental mistake of adding $700 to invoice and accidentally added $950, but whatever.. $250 ain't much - I'll ask him to throw in a sunshade and some keychains or something.
Anyway, he asked if I wanted lowjack for $595 and Audobahn for $495. do you guys recommend these? I live in Boston where I'll probably have to worry about theft more than Orange County, CA where I'm originally from, so I figure Lowjack is a good investment.
Audobahn, aka the Xpel kit made by 3M is a transparent film that goes over your front hood, front bumper, and side mirrors and helps protect against paint chips. Anybody have this?
sooooooo stoked - i almost have my new carrrrrr

dont believe the hype on lojack.. its BS in my opinion.
(do you really think the police have time to respond to every lojack call in time to save your car? w/ low jack they will eventually recover it at "their convenience" and usually after the car has been trashed. Its a gimick for the insurance companies to say hey we got your car back so now lets fix it instead of getting you a new one. THen they try to give it a sales spin that "no if your car is stolen and found its not up to you to decide if you want it back so its your best interest to get the car back asap" this is true but w/ cops over worked they will RARELY recover the car within the 10min or whatever they advertise..by the time they turn the lojack transponder on and search for it etc it will be too late and you will be stuck w/ a pile of junk and an insurance company who wants to save money by repairing it.
Save your money and purchase lease protection on your autoinsurance instead so that IF the car was stolen then one of two things would happen.
1. never found again or totaled = insurance gives you a new car and lease protection pays remainder of your lease (if leased..if financed then the money you get for the car goes to the bank essentially.
2. they recover your beat up car and in most cases costs too much to repair but if not then they repair it but you can haggle over declaring it as too expensive to fix.
by the way do you miss orange county ? LOL I lived in chicago for 2yrs and drove a POS crx on purpose (hard to have a nice/new car in some places around the country -especially cities)...here you can drive a farrari to highschool and no one will think twice hehehe funny place...ok maybe Im being over the top but I call it the "golden ghetto".

do i miss oc?? HELL YES I MISS OC!!!!! man, compared to orange county, boston is a PIECE OF ****. to go from spotless, wide, poker-straight super-flat roads to litter-filled, potholed, narrow winding, confusing streets is annoying.. and that's just the streets!
the people are *******s, the weather is horrible, and the girls are uuuuuuuuugly.
all good, i'm moving back to cali once i finish my remaining 2 years of college.
anyway, thanks for the advice - you pointed out the same thing my friend did - once it gets jacked, chances are it's not going to be in good condition anymore - they'll strip it of everything. might as well collect insurance money and buy another one.

FYI: Got lojak in mine for 395.00with lifetime warranty on my audi and 520 w/lifetime on my beemer.
Here are my experieces....and reasons why i have it in every car I have bought....
1)Best friend Got car jacked (.45 to the head) at a burger king in Cali. Car was found 1.5 hours later in east la. Nothing stolen, just the face plate from the radio....guess the theives did not want any one else stealing their loot...kinda of funny...
2)Car was stolen from a club in down town la... got it back in 8 hrs. Nothing stolen but the radio and quick takes.
My feeling is that theives now-a-day either break in your car and steal stuff...
If they really steal your car, they usually leave it parked somewhere for 24-48 hours and then hope it does not have lojak.
Either way, some insurances give you a break for having lojak and the breaks here in cali pay for the unit in about 1.5 years(depending how much you pay for it). After that, its money in your pocket.

also I appreciated reading vega's comments on lojak..makes me rethink..maybe he is right? Afterall he has real-world experience w/ it!
good luck..let us know how it works out and hopefully the car wont get jacked!
