I havent checked out the new nav's (ones w/ the maps) but I did have a chance to test out the old nav on a 2001 S4 and I have to tell you it rocks ! Amazing.. It is very much worth it if you are the type to use it properly(which if you are here on this site chances are you are the type to use it and figure it out.
Anyhow, I thought it was very rational..nicely integrated into the console and best of all once you program the basics in it is all voice prompted so you never have to take your eyes off the road. Additional bonus is that if you choose to ignore it -it wont screw up ..it continues to remap you to your destination. I thought it was awesome..it simply wasnt available when I got my car w/ the other options I wanted etc but if you are ordering and have to wait anyway I would say spend the extra money it is well worth it ! Try to get the dealer to hook you up w/ a few of the map DVDs for free if you can..those are pricey from what I understand.

I like it. The only disadvantage is that it isn't as pretty as those fullscreen maps and it's not on DVD yet. It gets me to where I have to go and it will take me on a pretty direct route. I have no comlaints.

Some major advatages is the placement of the dials. Your arm is in a relaxing position the whole time when entering data...updates on directions are quick enough in a city as well. It helps me in NYC all the time.

it's difficult (and dangerous) to use one while driving. Personally, I'll never buy another car that doesn't have a navigation system.

You'll play with it for a while then pay no attention to it.
