1) The old A4 has done extremely well in recent comparison tests with the newer 3-series, generally finishing 2nd but a close second. The improved handling & ride should tip the scales in the A4's favor.
2) I recall reading a CAR (I think) article a few months ago that compared the 3-series and new C-class to the new A4 (turbo diesel versions) - the A4 won that comparison.
3) Much has been said about the styling of the new A4. However I personally don't think the 3-series styling is all that great. The front looks good - but the side and rear are just so-so in my opinion. I think we've become extremely pickly about A4 styling because we're so spoiled by our B5 A4 design. The new one looks sharp too!
