electrical and mechanical, usually the only thing that goes wrong with those adjusters is they make a clacking noise at times.

...mine clacked around for a while before I finally replaced it. It's certainly NOT a $2000 job.

Something doesn't add up. Were they including any other odd jobs in that "2 grand" quote? How many hours of labor are they quoting? The tensioner is in the back and right on top -- all you have to do is pull the valve cover. From there it's pretty straightforward (on my AEB at least). I can't imagine book time being more than 2-3hrs. Pics:
