It's available at most Autozones and is about $6/qt. It's Castrol Syntec 0w-30 and says "Made in Germany" on the back and "European Formula" on the front. It's known as GC or German Castrol on the oil forums.
I just tried it on my last oil change and actually noticed a reduction in valve noise etc. It's a real synthetic (PAO/Ester based) and not a Group III base stock. IIRC, M1 0w-40 is a Group III.
Viscosity wise, it's about 12.0 cst which is darn close to a 40wt. It also retains it's viscosity better than M1. My last UOA showed a 30wt M1 sheared down to almost a 20wt over a 10k interval.
I need to double check to see if it meets the latest VAG specs, but so far I'm impressed. I'm also using one of the new EAO Amsoil filters that uses a nanofiber media instead of cellulose. I'll change the oil and take a sample at 10k. I probably won't change the filter until 20k (rated for 25k).
