A good friend of mine has a 911 turbo (964 I think) that he puts about 1,000 miles/year on. It currently has 21k on the clock. The Porsche shop he takes it to told him has HAS to change the oil on a periodic basis even if he doesnt drive it. They charged him $475 for his last oil change. Does this seem about right?
If the exotic-made-for-the-car synthetic oil they are selling him is that great, why does it need to be changed on an age basis? The car sits in his garage under a cover and is only driven on the occasional weekend trip.

I'd do 6 months or 5-6k miles. Porsche says 12k miles/12 months but oil is cheaper than a rebuild in case some sludge or carbon breaks off and decides to do something crazy.
There's a ton of oil (12-14 quarts) to soak up crap...but his issue is that it hurts if he isn't driving it.
My first change on my car after 8 months (mostly sitting, maybe 2k miles) yeilded almost a cup of WATER from the oil tank...
This happens when the car is never warmed up enough to get the water to boil out. The water will generally stay in the tanks/cooler and not go into the engine (which is good), but is never a good thing to have around.
He has a 911 Turbo. $475 a year isn't bad. Tell him to pull his painties up.

He's not a gear head so I think the mechanics see him coming and convince him that ~$500 for an oil change is a bargain.
Thanks for the info. I will pass it along. You still at Wright-Patt? Give me a ring if they ever send you to the Cape or Patrick.

I quit the AF work (and BearingPoint) in March. Been with CSC since May. Most likely turning in my notice to them this week... They stuck me on an Army project in NJ which really is poorly managed.
Heading out of Defense into finance consulting...done with this govt stuff.
You hear Bowen got canned?

I didn't know you left BP. Were they a bad company to work for, or was it the AF that drove you away?
My uncle is partner in a firm that does finance/cfo/venture consulting. He seems to enjoy the diversity of multiple clients and business fields vs. working for a major corp.

and they really know their stuff. Green knows them as well. Have him call them for a price/reality check.
