As I posted earlier, I saw an image of the "2000" A4 in a german magazine. It looks sure believable - I mean, one can see a car in the death valley some 1.5 years prior to release, and earlier this summer I saw the new S-class in Germany, so what.
Hope it is helpful,
- Stan

Notice the text of the article:
"der im Jahr 2001"
We're not going to be seeing this car for a while. Good thing too, as I just bought a 99 A4!
Fergus

Yes, I like the current body style better, but the illuminated switches in the A6 are really cool (namely the light switch, kinda makes sense).
Sorry for the original size, I forgot that not everyone works at hi-res...
- Stan

There are way too many sheetmetal and body changes for this to be a last-year-before-new-bodystyle makeover. This is most likely the all new 2000/2001 A4.
I compared a photo I took of my car from the same angle, and compared the two, and have come to the following conclusions:
1. Wheelbase appears to be longer. Notice that the rear overhang is shorter, and that the rear door appears to be longer than the current model(more in proportion with the front door).
2. Rear door is shaped different. Notice that is a straight, v-shaped cut (like the current A6), not the curved around the wheelwell shape of the current car. This is also indicitive of a longer wheelbase, and more back seat room (yay!).
3. The car has a subtle coke bottle shape along the bottom of the car (at the bottom of the doors and rear quarter panel). Current car just "rolls off" at the bottom of the doors. This is particularly apparent at the lower back corner of the rear door.
4. The roofline appears to be lower and more rounded, especially in the rear. The C-Pillar appears to be slimmer as well, especially at the base.
However, I do reserve the right to be wrong. This car does appear to have been at least lightly disguised, and the image seems to have been retouched as well (unless Audi is going to be the first maker to pure keyless for doorlocks).
Tom Halter
98.5 2.8 QM Pearl/Onyx
I think it looks like an accord. That's not a good thing. Looks too japanese.

I posted the same picture earlier and was wondering if anyone can do a translation on the article. I'm sure a lot of people here will be very much appreciated.

I hope they release the S4 in the US with their current A4 design.

The text about the A4 summarizes some changes for the A4 mid-year 99. It also says, "At the same time, the development of the successor will be running, which will be presented in the year 2001." Does this mean that there will not be an A4 in 2001? I can't really say from this snippet. However, I suspect this picture is the concept of the successor not an A4. I would be happy to look this page over and translate the relevant portions if somewhat wants to get my mail address via e-mail and mail me a copy of the article.
Clair 98.5 2.8 FWD MAN

Well the caption says the A4 is to have a "pummelfigur" --> A6 shape

Notice the windshield washers on the hood (Not relocated)
Notice the Non A6 style headlights.
Notice the lack of fogs in front bumper.
Notice the rear differences (from 99.5 report)
Is that sunroof larger, doesn't look like it.
Too many differences. Not likely to be the 99.5, who knows, maybe Audi is playing with another design concept for 2001.
Kirk

Don't knock the new A4 until you see one up close and in person. I have found that photos don't give a true image of cars. The current A4 looks much better in person as does the new TT. You can't see all the shape without actually being there. I reserve my opinion until I can touch one.
