What are the pros and cons of each?
I know at Mike's house we had a few modems replaced with the road runner, but other than that it was ok.

I've had sat for about 4 years now and it's definately frustrating not being able to get any reception when the weather gets bad.

I used to have cable modem, but I ditched it in favor of DSL. I got the fastest DSL available (3MBit) and it's faster and more reliable than my cable modem ever was...
I had some particular circumstances that influenced my decision...
1. Cable modem performance in Sanford was not very good, even on the best day. I think this might be infrastructure related.
2. Cable modem performance was dependant on overall usage in the neighborhood. Peak use times saw significant degradation in service quality and bandwidth.
3. I'm fairly close to the Central Office of my DSL provider so I get the best performance. I believe DSL is sensitive to distance.
4. Membership at 263 different porn sites. Need good reliable bandwidth to make the most of my porn $'s. With cable modem I was leaving too many megabytes on the table each automatically recurring billing cycle.
(OK #4 is a joke)

thanks to his totally wide-open wireless access point.

Although we occasionally lose the satellite during thunderstorms, it doesn't happen that often. Plus, I don't watch live TV anymore since getting a DirecTivo 3 years ago. I also have a HDTV tivo with a bigger dish so maybe that helps with the rain fade.
My biggest problem with cable is the service techs and their scheduling. The one time I tried to get cable, the guy was supposed to be there between 8-11AM, and finally showed around 4:30. He couldn't run the cable under the driveway, so another tech had to come out at a later date. I just gave up.
I have DSL for the same reason.
