View Full Version : On Speed right now- Some rednec saying why Jeff G. should go to F1 Mexican Audi (Shane) 08-18-2004, 07:42 PM Cuz, all F1 is rite now is hi speed parade laps....*spits* Jeff could go show em how to race. NASCAR = $150,000 bumper car F1 = $1,000,000 RACE car AutoXJunkie (Justin) 08-18-2004, 08:06 PM c'mon...you've got the 20 best drivers in the world (except the "pay" drivers). I'd think a few of them would know a thing or two about driving an F1 car to it's limits..... Just because JG is the best relative to his NASCAR compadres doesn't make him god. Longwolf (Christian) 08-18-2004, 08:20 PM Nimrod (Jody) 08-19-2004, 04:58 AM successfully and is not just a "turn left" driver. You've got to realize that many of these guys are good drivers, they're just going where the most $$$ is in this country. I might not like their kind of racing but not everyone can drive seperated by inches at almost 200MPH. And even when they race the road courses the true road course guys still don't beat the best NASCAR drivers. Of course saying that Gordon could race F1 is insane. It's pretty hard to adapt if you don't come up thru the F classes and get all that open wheel experience. spinti 08-19-2004, 06:12 AM in the early 90's. Stewart was organizing Gordon's ride into F1 when one(maybe 2) of the sponsors($$) backed out of the deal. As you know, it takes big bucks to buy your seat in F1. So, Gordon went NASCAR. He is a big open wheel fan and attends lots of F1 races. He's made his bed (and millions) in NASCAR and has to lie in it. He's good enough for F1. I feel sorry for him, the NASCAR fans hate him but he is probably the series best driver. All the top NASCAR guys are excellent driver, unfortunately they are only using a portion of their talent turning one way. Driving Excitement! 08-19-2004, 06:12 AM I know that's not what your talking about though. Tony Stewert was an IRL champion before going to NASCAR (granted ovals still but true open wheel). Jody's right NASCAR is where the money is at in American racing. There aren't any feeders here in the States to actually produce a champion winning F1 driver. Until that happens don't expect to see American and F1 to go together. I believe Jeff Gordon could probably do better than some of the drivers currently in F1. Longwolf (Christian) 08-19-2004, 06:18 AM tori645 (Vikki) 08-19-2004, 07:02 AM I'd pit the 2 Gordons and Stewart against the top 3 drivers from each of the other race disiplines if they all had to race in each other's disiplines..ie: they all race: rally, NASCAR, CART/INDY, F1, ALMS(proto or sports car).. Mexican Audi (Shane) 08-19-2004, 07:26 AM a couple of years ago. I have no doubt that he is a great driver, I just dont think he is going to fundamentally change the face of F1. Mexican Audi (Shane) 08-19-2004, 07:41 AM weight. Same reason Mark Martin is not overly popular. tori645 (Vikki) 08-19-2004, 07:50 AM He's one of the few drivers that doesn't take anyone out intentionally.. Mexican Audi (Shane) 08-19-2004, 08:16 AM He's done a lot of good things for the local community. People give these Nascar drivers too much credit. I believe you can take any F1 driver and put him in any kind of racing and he'll rise to the top pretty quickly (with a decent team). That same statement does not ring true for Nascar drivers. I will conceed that Jeff, Tony and Jr. probably could do better than most but still stand no chance in a F1 car. I have this debate with my redneck coworkers every week and they just don't get it. They always bring up the trading paint thing from last year between Juan Pablo and Jeff... somehow missed that JPM was driving Jeff's car at the limit after a couple of laps and Jeff was 10+ seconds off the pace of the slowest F1 driver. I mean look a DaMatta, former CART champion and could probably drive circles around Jeff in a road course car and he can't even out qualify his own teamate at Toyota. Not to mention that American sports car racing is just filled with previous F1 drivers and almost zero Nascar drivers. As much as I'd like to see an American driver in F1, it'll will take some serious commitment from an American sponsor to make it happen and that's too big of price to pay. That's a big gamble to go to the F1 stage which has 20x(probably an underestimated guess) the worldwide TV market that Nascar does. |
