I have been thinking about it a lot, and I would really like to spend a lot more time at the track...however, my current car configuration doesn't allow me to do that...
I am considering my options that end up with me having a track car and something to tow it with...
I must be crazy.

He's been trying to convince me to buy a Miata ever since I got a new job last summer. I think I am going to break down by summer and buy an old Miata for the next weekend/track car.
Take an early 90s Miata, add roll bar, suspension, rims, and I would have a nice car for the track, and it would be driveable as a weekend conv for the wife as well.

Enough to tow a miata I bet...

Unless you went with a full race car, you really wouldn't need a tow vehicle. You drive your street wheels to the event and either store your track wheels in the back (back seat removed, much trunk space) or get a simple hitch like Vicki had and put the wheels in a little carrier hanging off the trunk.
A Miata is certainly a viable option as well. Even though there is no horsepower there, you would probably only lose a few seconds per lap at Sebring vs. an M3. I used to drive my S4 at the track, so I'm a torque junkie.

A car that you can only run on the track is a waste of money if you ask me (unless you are dead set on competiting in a full race series like Spinti). You can have a very competitive track car that can also be driven on weekends with very little compromise.

I come from a family who has owned MANY MGs, Triumph and A-Healeys. Those cars are deathtraps without roll bars, and the bars help a bit.
My sister had a VW Cabrio a long time ago, and she was on an icey road and someone lost control and tapper her car from the side....spun her off the road and rolled 100 yards down a steep hill. Good thing the VW had a roll bar....
Hides the license plate...good for running toll plazas.

really depends on how many events you are planning on doing a year, how much effort you want to put into a track car, do you want to learn how to drive or just go fast, etc.
I agree that with your current car config doesn't make it easy for track days. You're tied up with the RS6; that's the nice, take the girl friend out to dinner, drive fast on the highway, road trip car.
I would look for a car to use a daily driver (most of the time) and as a track car. Plenty of cars can fit that bill, just which one is best for your situation is the question.
I picked the miata for many reasons. Rear wheel drive(a must), easy to work on, very dependable, plenty of parts/mods out there, excellent handling, plenty of friends who own/work on them. I went full out racing mode on it because it will help me be a better crew member for AJR. Otherwise, I would have keep my A4 and shared daily driving duties between it and the miata but tune up the miata for track days.

it to the track. Heck you could even rent a 26' truck and keep the car and everything in the back.

I am so damn picky about what I drive that I could not justify driving a truck or SUV so I could trailer a race car. Spinti at least still has an A4, so he can drive it whenever he gets tired of the truck.

Both of those cars are cheap to buy but I hear they are very expensive to maintain properly. I'm probably going with a '95 M3, a little more $$$ upfront but hopefully less for maintenance.

...you do web design work for them and they give you BIG discounts in return.
I've met the guys at RTR for lunch, and told them that they should buy some Miatas, and rent them for one third the cost. THat would build their customer base, and eventually some of them will want to move up to the BMWs and pay the big money.

I'm not sure what the better racing is, SCCA or Formula Dodge (skip barber, audijon) but both are very expensive. I imagine I would prefer the Formula Dodge, at least in theory the cars are identical.
Both routes are extremely expensive, figure $3000+ per race weekend. But to a man with an RS6, that's chump change.

It is only a little more expense in the long run but you get more set time and no wrench time.
my friend justen goes to a lot of driving schools around the region as well as participating in track events. he is on his second car because he originally bought a car for track/ daily use then realised he was wasting a ton of money and time on the upkeep of a daily driver car (miles, cleaning, maintanence, etc). the original car was a custom made 318ti with an e36 m3 engine dropped into it. in the end it was a very nice track car (and show car) that just couldn't handle the every day situation because of suspension, roll cage, short clutch, shifter and a myriad of other things. he ended up buying a track built 318ti and drives an SUV (oh the sin) to tow it around.
he is quite active in the jacksonville bmw club, and is full of information regarding the subject (as well as his uncle, the red car on the site). send him an email and tell him jeremy sent you, though he will be out of town for a couple of weeks.
Its a very different car from the Elise - open top pure track car, 600kgs. Looks SICK! If I had the money for a dedicated track car, that would be it hands down. Ive seen videos of a 340R handing with Porsche GT3/Gt2 as well as Ferrari F40/F50 on a road course!

I know a guy who does the conversions.... and i hear of another person who built his S2000 engine (f20c) to IIRC 500whp all engine.... I am fairly sure it was all engine anyways..... But 500hp + 600kgs = pure track evil :)

because a car with those specs is way over my head and I think I have pretty decent skills. You must have a karting background or something similar..
