View Full Version : Ok you closet mechanics...what is a transmission mainshaft? and why did mine go bad? Steve S. 11-03-1999, 12:25 PM Apparently my car has to get it replaced? Musta been all those midnight street races with the C5 Corvettes and Vipers :-) Steve S. 97 2.8QM Cris 11-03-1999, 12:30 PM Ed 11-03-1999, 12:53 PM DaveN 11-03-1999, 01:14 PM in most designs it is also the output shaft. As to why one would need replacing I don't know. About the only thing I can think of is a spun bearing (bearing seized and spun on the shaft, damaging the surface). I'm wondering if they know what is really bad, because you would have to break down the gearbox to find this, and it seems as if they are just changing gearboxs, not repairing them. The two times I've broken transmissions it was a cluster gear (not quite sure how to discribe that part) that broke. Blew about a week of my spare time each time to rebuild it (and the cluster is not a cheap part). I've since learned not to break these parts, too much work to fix. Likely causes of mainshaft or mainshaft bearing failure: Bad pilot bushing in the crank; some short of bell housing mis-alignment; winding the bitch up to 5K and then dumping the clutch; bad karmha; bad bearings/bad machining in the transmission case (in which case, it'll be back...) . Warranty claim ? I thought that your use of ATE Super Blue voided all your warranty rights, and made you eligible for EPA Super Fund payments. Sorry to hear of your troubles, though. Let us know what the full story is after it gets fixed. Chris Steve S. 11-04-1999, 06:34 AM You don't hear anything in 2-5th gears. It has been doing this for about 1 year now...I finally got the dealer to do something about it...and they say it is the transmission. BTW, I have never dropped the clutch at 5,000 rpm...or anything even close. Steve S. Audiboy 11-04-1999, 06:59 AM look at my opened up tranny in the back yard, but I know there are shared shafts between gears, so like 1st and 4th might share one, 2nd and 3rd - so I expect you to hear the sound on 2 gears. When I blew up my Mazda tranny by accelerating hard on 2nd, I instantly lost 2nd and 3rd, but I had 1st and 4th (with a very nasty thug because of a missing gear tooth on the main shaft) and I blew out the 2nd gear shaft. To me, sounds like a worn gear. Ever wonder why reverse is loud? It's because of the gear design. They are cut straight and quite loose fit. For the forward gears, they have circular cuts to make the most contact tooth after tooth, thus quiet. A worn out gear will start 'the reverse gear sound' Maybe I'll go back to my closet now Jim Simone 11-04-1999, 03:40 PM |
