I don't want to actually use it. I'm prototyping a steering column housing and I need to take a bunch of dimensions then use it to test fit the part.

View Full Version : Anybody have an AutoMeter or VDO boost gauge I can borrow? AWOT extra 23052 10-22-2001, 10:58 AM I don't want to actually use it. I'm prototyping a steering column housing and I need to take a bunch of dimensions then use it to test fit the part. AWOT extra 23052 10-23-2001, 08:54 AM Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm using the technology provided to me, to produce an OE quality boost gauge housing that will replace the upper steering column piece of plastic. I only need to borrow a 'typical' boost gauge a day to take measurements. The gauge will be returned to its owner in the same condition it was given to me. Once the prototype is finished, I'll be sending high temp castings to various manufacturers (APR, Audi etc..) to see if there is an interest in somebody taking what I've done and actually having an injection mold tool made. If not, I'll make several soft tools and inject high temp urethane parts so we can actually use them for ourselves. This will apply to A4 and S4 owners as the part is the same. Still need screw boses etc... HDClown 10-23-2001, 12:33 PM Someone on A4 forum developed a prototype exactly like this and was supposedly going to be trying to get these mass produced and what not. I think you'd probably have a finished product that's to commercial quality in like 1/100 the time this guy did it. And I remember a lot of people wanting to get one of that guys center column boost guage pods to... I'm holding out for the Ed/James trip computer integration for boost, but there's some other things that could probably be real useful with the products you have access too.. AWOT extra 23052 10-23-2001, 12:59 PM I remember seeing a steering column boast gauge mount as well. It looked very well, to be nice, 'do it yourself'. It was cool, just not something I want to put in my new $26+ automobile, know what I'm sayin?! I'll definately have prototypes for those that want them to try out. Ross's idea is also a good one. A V1 mount (radar detector?). Driving Excitement! 10-23-2001, 01:46 PM that was molded into the steering column. It was very trick. HDClown 10-23-2001, 02:10 PM although apparently ed/james are working on getting that integrated into the trip computer as well, but I think that may be some time off. The next best things I've seen that I like the most for a V1 mounting are in the cup holder flushed mounted and these: http://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/384563.phtml http://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/337185.phtml (This is probably what Ross is talking about). That way if for some reason the car needs to go back to stock you can. I can do a V1 I just need some dimensions, and wire locations. HDClown 10-24-2001, 07:07 AM aside from the mute button, all it is is that 1 piece of plastic over the steering column which is probably a $10 part. Some day I'll buy a stinkin V1 and remote display, but I'm guessing someone around here already has one AWOT extra 23052 10-24-2001, 09:00 AM Driving Excitement! 10-24-2001, 01:16 PM How close of a match (color & texture) can you get to the cupholder plastic? AWOT extra 23052 10-25-2001, 05:53 AM that looked so 'real', the VP that runs our Hemmingway production fascility couldn't tell the difference between our models and his production parts. Driving Excitement! 10-25-2001, 03:22 PM Or either a piece with a cut out so I could put some tinted Plexi in front of the display. I can compensate financially.
