I read someplace that the 130mph limit on the 2001 A4 is because that is the speed limit for the tires. Then I was like, 'hey wait a minute' the SP8000 are Z rated tires (149 and up). I have a friend who has a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro with 16" and sport package and the same tires. Wow, I really went off on a tangent, anyway, I don't think its Classic only, I bought mine from Reeves and it had em too.

Note: If any of those numbers are wrong please correct me.

I ask this because someone out in Cali got a 2001.5 with Sport Package (17" wheels) and he got some Pirelli's. There was also a post on the AW A4 forum asking kinds of tires people gots and everyone said Pirelli's or Michellin's.

are not rated Z (I think they are "H" rated), therefore they make the governor at 130hp. It is easier for Audi to make all A4s governed at 130 rather than govern sport A4s at 145, and non sports at 130.

If someone got the 17" quattro sport celebration package, then yes, they to get the Perillis or the Michelins.

Everone tells me those Pirelli's and Michellins are crap compared to the SP8000's on the 16" Sport package, so why would Audi do that?

They may be crap to people like us who are only concerned about summer performance tires, but maybe they are better all season tires (some poor people have snow!), or maybe they will last longer, or Audi got a better deal on these tires, or they are less prone to punctures or whatever.

Remember, if Audi puts tires that blow easy on their cars, Audi is going to incur a lot of costs of owners calling roadside assistance to get that tire swapped out since most people don't change their own tires anymore. So, if Audi can put tires on their cars that are less prone to failure, they will save money in the long run.

Just some theories.....

actually, someone did mention how they were more all season tires, so that would be a good theory
