View Full Version : Do you recommend using clay bars? Even for silver? Any particular brand?

If I had a dark colored car I would probably have done it by now. Since I have silver I haven't given it much thought.

They do a nice job of picking up the grit that sticks to your paint. I would wash the paint both before and after using the clay. I also use car wash soap during the clay process to lubricate the surface. A good place to start if you're unsure is the rear bumper. That tends to pick up the most grit, and you'll really see a difference there.

My car is generally pretty clean most of the time but I would like to make sure the paint stays as nice as possible.

I saw someone at Texas World Speedway using the clay bar on his black 944 Turbo. I was floored what the difference was when he was done!

is licensed from the patent holder. Wish I could find the article I read a few weeks ago as proof.

...it worked so well that I'll probably only use the provided clay once more before chucking it and getting new clay.

It took twice as long to clay as it usually takes me to wax. The finish was "oh so smooth" aftwerwards.

BTW, my car is a 2001 Silver A6 2.7T.

it does remove everything but heck, silver looks good after going through a dust storm. For me its more for the 'feel' of the paint.

After a nice day of clay and zaino I can stroke the car for hours..lol :)

I used a 3M claybar on my paint last week before heading to the NE Event. I found it much more difficult to work with than Mothers clay. When warm, the mothers clay is much more pliable, and it also seem to do a better job of pulling contaminants off the paint. The 3M in comparison was very stiff, and it took repeated passes to pull off what I know the mothers clay can do in just two passes. Sorry for the bum steer! I'll drop you a note when I get home in case you don't see this. Mother's and Meguiar's seem to be readily available, and I haven't heard complaints about either one.

....the Meguiar's wasn't as good (that's the one I've been using). He said he tested a whole bunch of different ones.
