View Full Version : I had my first "barn find" today (pics)

well....more like junk yard find. Location secret, as I might inquire. All the cars around it had for sale signs...and it had a number on the dash. Pics don't do it just...Its sad. :)
I wonder how much they want, they obviously don't give a crap about it. There is a bunch of gravel on the hood. No one was there...which is why I grabbed a few pics. I have always wanted a project and a Urquattro. How much would you ask for it assuming engine problems? I could see this sitting in my garage for years not being fixed! ha

the seller really isn't sure what he/she has. Anything more would be a roll of the dice.

Act mildly interested and offer a few hundred (barely more than it's worth as scrap metal). It's got big issues with paint/rust (and gravel!). Body looks relatively straight on the right side, at least the all-important fenders. Front spoiler looks good too. Left side might be nasty, though. I would assume the interior is squalid and the drivetrain ugly. Let's not even discuss the wiring. When did the tag expire? That'll give you a clue about the last time it ran.

he's got an XJS 12 cylinder behind it and an early 924 in front of it. He may not be to careful in how he stores it, but I'm sure he thinks it has some "value" to it.

the other members of the family may not have a clue. Even if the last driver is alive and well there's no guarantee he/she knows what the value might be, for better or worse in the case of a buyer.

What a great find! What a great project. The car looks straight and clean. All the glass looks to be in place.....Nice! If it were me I would strip it down to the chassis and rebuild. Good luck! Please keep us informed....

reminds me of a time my father saw an xk120 in somebody's back yard. No cover, weeds all around, horrible condition, but a good project. He goes to ask the guy how much he wants for it, and the guy cops some attitude that he "knows what he has, and how much it's worth".

We left the rusty heap there in his yard, where it probably still sits today. Definitely worth more rusting away in the yard than as cash in hand...

If I were to take a guess I'd say Michigan? Listen to me.... Ha ha ha I wish.

However? There is no front plate or even holes where a bracket should be....humm? We don't have front plates here in Mi.

Also the gray skyline and a few hints of crap snow piles in the background looks like the landscape right outside my office window...hummm?

Also it's flat...Hummm?

Ok I'll stop dreaming.

These were at Mid-Ohio a few years ago. The mars is Saltino's very early '83 and the tornado is my '86, so we had both extremes of the North American spectrum. In the second picture you can really see the difference between the early and late rear valence.

I think I still had the G60s at that point, and those would be overwhelmed in that braking zone after about two laps. I swung wide out of that turn more times than I care to remember. Here's one where I did a bit better:

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/36749/mid-o_front2.jpg">

That exact turn was where I first fell in love with my new Boxster setup. I absolutely hammered those brakes (on purpose), and they didn't flinch until late in the sessions, and even then it was a predictable fade.

That year was great fun. Tom and I played cat-and-mouse for lap after lap. Wonderful sights and sounds!

The RS2 won't be done in time this year, but he's making steady progress. You can be sure it'll be there when it's done, and it'll be worth the trip to see it.

but that's what we spent on our UrQ, and I was at least able to drive it home!

If he just wants it gone though, it'd be a steal at $1k or less! Kind of like the one I tried to buy a few years back at an auction down near Atlanta. Unfortunately someone that knew about the car was there and kept outbidding everyone from what I was told :(

the old adage used to be that you should find the nicest one you can afford and buy it, because parts, if available, are certainly not cheap, and you rarely ever recoup the $ invested fixing up a car anyway if you have to sell it.

Glad to see you're still around on the Audi side. Your car leads a pampered life in the N Ga mountains. Tom took it to Mid-O that one year, but since then it's just taken out for recreational drives in nice weather.

Talked to him on the phone today. He was wanting a thousand for it. I didn't try to talk him down as I'm on the fence. He said the engine ran when he parked it, but the clutch was out. And now that is been sitting, the mice have gotten under the hood and chewed on some hoses. I'd like to go take a good look, but am still on the fence. Is it worth a thousand?

zsmithdc

$1000 seems like a reasonable price for the car, given the condition. That's not to suggest the seller won't sell it for less, but that it's a price I would pay for that car. It is, however, only the initial cost and you'll need to spend plenty of money and, if you choose to undertake this little endeavor yourself, time, getting it running.

With any car that has been sitting since '91 and that clearly hasn't been stored appropriately, there are some risks you face. You'll most likely want to change the timing belt, for example, before you even considering trying to turn the engine over.

Rust may be a significant issue, considering it's parked against a wall. I'm restoring a Renault that was parked against a fence since 1991 (curiously, the same year) and the side along the fence is significantly more rusted than the other. Given the rarity of those flared front fenders, that would be a concern. Because this car is definitely pre-'85, there's no chance that it was galvanized, either.

But all that doesn't matter if you really like the car. As everyone has alluded to, the UrQ is nothing short of incredible. (There are 368 views of the pictures you posted!) It's just a question of whether it's worth it to you.

No, I don't own an UrQ, but if I had found this one, I would have bought it.

Hope this helps.

I agree...I am very tempted as I pretty much have winters off, and would really like to embark on a project like this. I'm guessing if I get nowhere with it, I could recupe my money from someone who could take over.

UrScubed

It may or may not ultimately be salvageable (rust would be my main concern), but look at it this way- if you can just park it somewhere dry and/or covered, it won't get any worse, which is a win in and of itself.

I paid $2K not that long ago for another 83 that 3 of us were able to turn into a reasonably complete runner in a few days, but at the time I bought it parts were scattered literally all over the PO's house and yard. I had more than a few "what was I thinking" moments while trying to find obscure parts like the brackets that hold the fuel tank in the trunk (how do you misplace THOSE?) and trying to scrounge together a complete rear brake setup starting with 1 carrier and 1 bolt, but we managed and the car is still on the road as far as I know.

Have a good look at the car and start adding up the value of the parts if yu were to part it out. If it comes to more than $1k then it is a good deal. Seeing as how these cars are so rare I'd suggest that it seems like a good price to pick it up and then worry about what you are going to do with it later.

It doesn't seem like he's going to do anything with it so getting it out of his yard might start to look appealing. See if he'll take less and increase your margin of safety. In this economic climate he's unlikely to find another guy walk up and offer him cash for it.

I honestly think that if it comes down to a [**very rare and iconic**] car or a camera (even if its a D200) definately get the car...
