Thought I would see what you guys would do. I have quite a few spare parts, coupe GT doors+ hood, 3 piece BBS RF wheels, AC equuipment, lights, stock brakes, ect, ect, ect. The motor is all there but has a blown headgasket and has been sittting for years because of the previous owener. There is some rust but all glass, drivetrain and interior is in the car.
I hate to part a car that could be saved but I dont think I have the $$$ right now to do a body off resto. Let me know what ya think.
Thanks
Bob

I've been looking for the "right" project for awhile.

This isn't an early red one that came out of NY a couple years back is it? If so I was thinking about buying it back then but was scared of it not running at the time myself.

No, this one was in the Chicago area most of its life. Not sure on price as I haven't decided I want to give up for sure. The body work is what is scaring me. You can email me at radmachergb@comcast.net

and not scrap it for parts.

Though I would love to snag a few parts off the car, I'd rather see it live on :)

Nope, I've been holding onto it for a while. Give me a call. I have lots of extra parts that may go along with it if the price is right.

They aren't that rare cars. People have parted so many 200 20vT Avants and nobody says anything.

You will get peanuts for it as-is. Parting it out you'll get more out of it and many more UrQs will survive around this one, without breaking the bank.

These cars are really really cool but let's nto fool ourself - they aren't 356s or early 911s and similar. You or someone else may spend a fortune on ground up resto, but IMHO that is really bad move. Only way it would pay off is if you keep the car forever. Some may. Many won't.

I'd part it, collect the cash and use it to buy a somewhat nice example to fix up and preserve.

No matter what model, well I cant say that, I could care less about 1996 and up models.

Take a nice 200 20v Avant just for the engine, when there is nothing wrong with it is stupid :(

kidding, Peter.

It's all in how you look at it I guess, so you're not necessarily in the wrong by saying that. Though they're not worth much, there def isn't a lot of them out there. Unless it's in really rough shape (i.e. literally rusting apart), it'd be worth fixing it up.

But you're also talking to someone who picked up one that was def in pretty bad shape and plans on doing a full ground up restoration to it. Will we ever get the $$ out of it that we drop into it? Not a chance in hell, unless a crazy audi collector wants to drop the coin. But my dad, brother and I will get the experience and bonding time of tearing it down and rebuilding it. Guess that's more than worth it to me.

you want it exactly your way or back to original you are going to be way better off (financially) paying up front and buying a really nice example.
The labour and parts cost ads up really quick.
I had a spreadsheet going for my 3B conversion, and in parts alone (no including labour) I was into $8500 and that did not include the car.
So.. would I do it again, sure, but I have a screw loose somwhere up there.. ;)

There just isnt anyone around me in the know that can take a look and see what they think. I really want someone to look at the underside of the car.
I planned on replacing the rusty fenders with a Sport Q kit anyway:)Been collecting 7A cams, Blacked out tails, new Scat forged 20v rods, Audi Sport shift knob, 3 Piece BBS RF wheels, ect that I want to see on the turd. :P

A 200 Avant is no comparison to an urq. Neigher is a 20V CQ. The avant and the CQ are pretty much insignificant blips on the hierarchy of important or collectible cars. Urquattro will routinely get into the top 10 on greatest sports cars, greatest rally cars and most significant cars of all time.

In terms of value, they aren't up there with the other models and types you mention, but thats a rather odd approach to determine what makes a worthwhile car. Its not just $$$ value.

It does need to be put in the care of someone that may want to have a decent driver/ track machine.

With that in mind, there are plenty of parts that could be sold-off along the way to help offset a track-car project.

from talking to Bob couple months back about the car he said it himself it is pretty badly rusted out. I haven't seen it, but i took his word for it....and thus my comments.

I still think it's far more financially better to buy one in nice shape. Use bad examples to help those that aren't that bad.
That was my whole point...oh well. I'd buy one myself and maybe I will one day, but until I can afford a nice one I will wait.

I was talking to Nate about your project and I told him you are crazy....but then he pointed you are doing it with your dad and now I see your brother as well - that's a totally different story, a really nice on eat that.
My dad passed away past September and I can only wish I could spend time like that with him.

Im quite passionate about keeping older Audi's that are in fantastic shape ON the road and NOT parted out. Granted there are cars that should be parted out due to heavy mechanical failures OR accidents, or a combination of both.

Too many times Ive come across perfectly nice (and sometimes rare) Audi's kick the bucket and ultimately to the crusher.

I realize not everybody things alike, but like you, I have screws loose up there, but thats the enthusiast I am. I love OEM'ness, down to nuts, bolts, and the stereos :)

I have a LOT of respect for cars (owners) that are completely original, especially if used on regular basis, not just trailer/garage queens.

I'm willing/able to help, and I'm only a few hours away. We'll swap in my old WX if we have to. I want to see this car back on the road.

I'm sure I/we can convince Mike to come out for a day as well, especially if you have Strohs in the fridge.

Let's get the car running, or at least try. Then I'll give you 2500 for it if you still want it gone.

I will likely sell my white 1983.5 urquattro to make room.

I've always wanted an UrQ (couldn't afford to buy one AND fix it up... was an either/or situation), my dad has always loved them (ever since Charlie Day's pimped UrQ years ago that was in q-quarterly), but doesn't really have the know-how, and my brother thinks they're cool, but is more into older porsches.

After looking the car over originally, my dad and I were hyped, and my brother was excited, but not to our level. His only stypen if we did buy the car, that we go all the way with it and do a full restoration. I wouldn't be surprised if we drop $30k b/n the 3 of us into the car (body work alone is going to be $15k easily), but in the end we'll have something that we built together and had a good time doing/learning. Will we ever see that money again? Honestly, I'd be really surprised if we did... but in the end, we'll have a fun car to drive around and take to the track every now and again. And since we obviously don't have that kinda $$ laying around, this is def a long term project :)

I know when we parted out that coupe, it was kinda funny to see the 3 of us out there busting eachothers balls and carrying on. My mom though we were nuts and has been regretting giving us the "permission" to buy this project more and more by the day, but she likes that we're spending the time together like we are.

and if the under fender portion is rusty, I might be picking up another parts car soon and will happily cut them out for you and make them available for sale :) Shipping might be interesting, but that's what Greyhound is for!

there is no $ value you can put on that. In my case,I'm the father with my sons "helping" me, sort of. They are constantly breaking my stones about all these "Audi" projects I have and try to talk me out of them.

They all want to drive the urq though and keep pushing me to get it done.

My wife is not too thrilled about them either, she complains I don't make any money off them, she just doesn't understand I buy cars to fix, drive and enjoy, then when I get tired of them, sell. She is still mad I sold my 928, which I thought she hated (she only likes the 911), for $1 more than I paid for it.

By the way, my sons are VAG addicted also, VW style.

And a note to Justin - LI 50miles E of NYC.

dad used to do a bit of toying w/ his old 914 and volvo back in the day, but that kinda tapered off (more b/c the newer cars he got didn't need points and valves replaced/adjusted ever few thousand miles :-P). he's starting to get back into it. I get random phone calls at times of him trying to fix something on the Ur and I just kinda laugh.

On your fender:
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/119864/urmine7.jpg">

I don's see this kind of rust along the top of the fender (which is usually a sign of much worse underneath)
<Img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/crust1.jpg">

Although, it is kind of hard to know what is hiding until you look.

A bit rough perhaps, but good enough as a "rollling restoration"!<ul><li><a href="http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3695741">Sepp's "Rolling Restoration"</a></li></ul>

When I sold my 4ktq I was happy that save for the motor and suspension, I had brought it back to OEM spec in a sense.

People things Im nuts for liking the cars exactly how they are, but its just the type of enthusiast I am. This does NOT mean I dont like engine swapped cars or other modifications :)

Very glad to be an Audi enthusiast, but kinda ticked at NLA parts...

Looks like I'll probably be going through Indianapolis area, or South chicago. probably splitting the Indianapolis and Chicago people.

When I used to come up to the F1 races, I could reach Indy by about 4-5pm local time, if I made the Arkansas border the previous night.
