View Full Version : 81 Rally Tribute Car
cegerer 01-24-2009, 01:43 PM I've spent the last few months gradually converting my 81 ur into a rally 'tribute car'. I've researched 100s of fotos of the early factory cars in 80 and 81 and have used these as a guide to my modifications. I'm not trying to do an exact replica, but try to do everything in a 'period-correct' manner.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0042_front.jpg">
These are near identical to the early factory light brackets. I'll eventually be replacing the inexpensive Hella 500s with some proper rallye lights!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0051_light_bracket.jpg">
I fabbed up these windscreen hold downs last night. I'll have 4 of these on the rear window as well.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0043_windscreen_holddown.jpg">
Used some rubber straps for trunk hold downs.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0045_rear.jpg">
I removed the driving and fog lights and replace them with wire mesh for ventilation. Also note bullet mirror and hood latches.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0052_detail.jpg">
I completely gutted the interior. Rear seats are gone, everythng's covered with lightweight carpet. Corbeau race seats and replica rally door panels were also installed. The roll bar and gauges were already in the car. I removed the glove box and moved the auxiliary relay panel and ECU under the dash. Removed the console and relocated the window switches. This is all still a work in progress.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0048_dash.jpg">
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0049_interior.jpg">
I installed some extended wheels studs to allow the use of various spacers. I'm running some 6 inch steelies with Pirelli Winter 190s right now. I've got a set of 7" Fuchs with gravel tires for summer. The car has Eibach springs with Koni's.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/mods_002.jpg">
Battery moved to trunk.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/battery_trunk.jpg">
So this car is a work-in-progress and I've got lots more to do (i.e. harnesses, mudflaps, fender arch extensions, sunroof delete, etc.) I plan to do some ice racing and rallycross with it, but mostly its just for fun running the fire trails north of here. I'll have it up at the SnoDrift Rally next weekend. Should be interesting to see if any of the Subie boys have any idea what it is .... :)
Geriet 01-24-2009, 02:00 PM Nice , which must make genuinly fun. Drifting in the snow ........ a question: The second clock (digital) what is that?
Does you information approach?

stockornot 01-24-2009, 06:28 PM I mothballed my stock seats until I can get them redone and got the same Corbeau's for Xmas. I have been seriously considering the bullet mirrors for some time (although, mine would be in the current mirror location), and thought about using screens for the inner headlamps a couple of months back as well. Further still, the other night I started to think about putting the battery in the trunk because of the hassle with the seats being in the way. And to send the final chill, I've got a Mars car. Difference is, mines not a roller right now. One question, I got the Corbeau seat brackets. If you used them as well, are you comfortable with the height? I am 6'0, and am probably going to drop the rear of the bracket to recline the seat a bit and get some more head room. Any experience with that? I think in a few months your car and mine will diverge abit, as your future mods are a little further from stock than I am going, but I have a couple of secret plans in my head that would flat out scare me if I saw you post pics of.
cegerer 01-24-2009, 07:04 PM I shimmed the front of the seat brackets with some washers to get a bit more recline. The seat sits an inch or so lower than my stock seat so I don't think you'll have a problem. I'm really impressed with the Corbeaus so far.
Relocating the battery is a snap. There's enough slack in the factory cable so all you need do is run a new ground.
The mirrors were done both ways. In the end, I decided to drill into the door :) One thing is for sure, the factory cars changed from event to event (and even day-to-day in many rallies!). It's hard to find 2 fotos with the same details.
One thing is consistent: the Audi rings are zip-tied onto the grill on most every factory rally car :) (look at my 2nd foto)
stockornot 01-24-2009, 08:14 PM Thanks. Thought about the washers. Just didn't try it yet. I've also noticed that about the mirrors too. I've wondered if they kept them low because of visability when sideways. Just seems like the view would be awkward. Of course, they probably didn't use them much. Looks cool though. I wonder why they did that with the rings. Some look very hastily put on too. I like the oversized white ones on the beak grille. Thanks for posting the pics; looks even cooler than my minds eye.
fusilier 01-25-2009, 05:47 AM You must be careful, cause there is a slippery slope here too. You might wake up and find that you're closer to a race car than a street car.

i search for a solution in orange digitalnummers for the ,how do you say, "Turbopressure??"
The "Turbopressure" by the orange Digi in my 20V does not indicate!
How has a solution perhaps a picture ?

cegerer 01-25-2009, 09:32 AM thru the body, it becomes a free-for-all :)
I know there are those who think it's sacrilege to cut up an urq like this, particularly an early one. But this car sat in a damp warehouse for years. The interior was very musty smelling and there is no way to get that smell out (I tried everything). I would have needed to install a completely new interior - and where do you get the pieces to do that? The smell was still there until I took out the very last piece! Also, the gauges were already screwed into the dash, so that was shot.
This summer, I'm going to start going thru the suspension. Lots of dried out bushings.
cegerer 01-25-2009, 09:35 AM using your car as one of my references. I don't think I'll ever take it to that level. You got a hell of a deal on that car from what I've read. To try to replicate what you have would require some TARP bail-out funding!
Rally43 01-25-2009, 05:06 PM Curt..
Your winter car looks great !
I will be there as well.. Running Medical Sweep.. I was going to take my URQ, but ive been chasing one minor problem after another and it looks like we will be the only med sweep, and I dont want to have any stages cancelled due to a URQ down in a stage.. so I will be one of those Subie guys WHO Will know what your car is... lol
cegerer 01-25-2009, 06:13 PM I was really looking forward to seeing the urq. Well, if you see me, make sure to say hello. We'll be in Lewiston Fri. at Parc Expose and Service and Sat at the High School. My buddy is driving up with me in his blue 68 911, complete with rally lights, steelies and Blizzaks :)

fusilier 01-26-2009, 07:13 AM Here it is almost 6 years later and it's finally able to finish a weekend track event . Most of the systems on the car have been replaced and/or repaired. All In all the cars been fun, next up is a dashboard replacement. I'm going to wire in an original rallydash. Also will be swapping back in the aluminum engine and a solid lifter head
bosmass 01-26-2009, 09:44 AM Hey nice car - I did something similar to an 88 Conquest. Now it looks close to the car which was camapigned in wrc portugal in 88 by Mitsu. I may have it up at Snodrift this weekend if I can make time. I'll be sure and say hey.
bosmass 01-26-2009, 10:12 AM I have been meaning to ask you where you had your car or cars painted. I think I had read somewhere that some paint work had been done in the Detroit metro area. I am looking at having my urq painted. Maybe not the whole thing, but at least a trunk and a hood. Hopefully I am not confusing your cars with someone else's. Thanks.
cegerer 01-26-2009, 10:24 AM on my cars. The 81 had been repainted before I bought it.
squidix9 01-26-2009, 12:05 PM Looks nice, keep up the good work!
shortyq 01-26-2009, 12:22 PM Buffum was known to go on record saying he loved the Rally 2000 lights, at the time his sponsor for lights was Bosch (I was at that banquet actually - awkward silence abounded). I'm pretty sure I have a few sets of the period correct Bosch Motorsport lights if you are ready to put some real light on those brackets....

cegerer 01-26-2009, 02:24 PM That's a huge project as you know. Have you seen this one? Scroll down to the end and there are some great fotos of this guy's RHD rally dash conversion.<ul><li><a href="http://retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=print&thread=3 6772">Rally Dash Build</a></li></ul>
cegerer 01-26-2009, 02:29 PM Martin, I'm making some shop chairs out of the seats (basically just bolting some legs onto the mount points). But I can go thru the rest of the stuff I've pulled off the car and see what is all there. It's all in a box and I have no plans to use the stuff.
cegerer 01-26-2009, 02:32 PM Can you send me an eMail and let me know the details on the Bosch lights.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/brp4.jpg">
I really like driving late at night, with *lots* of light to help see the way. Problem is, most times you can't use all the light because of oncoming traffic. :-(

20vqtro 01-26-2009, 07:33 PM Pffff nothing like SEEING THROUGH on comming traffic bro....
fusilier 01-26-2009, 07:49 PM A. I already have an original rally dash.
B. My car is already wired for the gauges.
squidix9 01-27-2009, 05:27 AM ...contact me asking me what it would take to build a car up like mine. I also get a lot of inquiries about just building up a B3 for rally. You don't realize what it takes to put one of these together. Sure it's the big stuff, but the infinite amount of detail also adds up. Not to mention the tremendous number of hours required to do it also. Not something for the faint of heart to undertake.
I have to ante up and order a new distributor cap and rotor for mine one of these day's. It's something I am having to budget for. Almost $150 for a cap and rotor make you sit up and pay attnetion when it comes to cost.
squidix9 01-27-2009, 05:29 AM I tell them that they really don't want to, especially for something they plan on driving on the street at all.
It's hard to get it across that these aren't anything close to what they think they are.
cegerer 01-27-2009, 06:58 AM It never ceases to amaze me how much time it takes to do even the smallest of projects. I have a great deal of respect for guys who do total restorations, engine rebuilds and such on their own. As an example, those light brackets I made are about as simple as it gets - aluminum plate cut to shape, 1 bend and a few holes drilled thru. I spent the better part of a Sat morning making those and mounting them. And that's just the friggin' light brackets!!
cegerer 01-27-2009, 07:04 AM And it's more fun too - I drive this thing no matter what the weather conditions are (as it should be). :)

Katman 01-27-2009, 09:28 AM You would be correct Mark!
No trees like that at home.
That was at a carwash, somewhere near the southern end of out 'Blueridege Parkway' trip.
Although, that only put us in Kentucky I think, so still, no real palms.
The palm was in a plantpot at the carwash..

dtompsett 01-29-2009, 10:46 AM I found the Bosch 225 driving pattern is nicer than the Hella 2000 pattern. More light output.
Plus... the Hella 2000 is an H2 bulb... nearly impossible to find. And impossible to get an HID conversion kit for.
Katman 01-30-2009, 09:42 AM >I found the Bosch 225 driving pattern is nicer than the Hella 2000 pattern. More light output.
Well, that would all depend on the style of light that you have. I find that the combination of the wide 'cornering' lamps that really have no beam, and the pencil beams pretty well covers all situations! :-)
>Plus... the Hella 2000 is an H2 bulb...
*Some* of them are H2. Four out of my six H2000's have H1 bulbs.
So, as they say:
Different lights for differetn cars, I guess.!
dtompsett 01-31-2009, 04:41 PM for winter rally use... I found the pencils to be almost useless on backroads. Fogs were handy, but you could accomplish almost the same with a set of driving beams.
I had 4 driving beams... traded a set for fog beams... wish I'd kept the driving beams.
For night driving, given 2 Bosch 225's vs. 2 Hella 2000's... I'd take the Bosch 225's. Driving beams please.
Of course... I've managed to break 1 Bosch 225 fog... and 1 Bosch 225 pencil. One of these days I'll get replacements for them... one of these days.
dtompsett 01-31-2009, 04:45 PM When I ran OWR a couple years back in the 4000q... with a dual-round H4+H1 conversion (running stock wattage bulbs, but E-code headlight conversions)... I passed someone on a transit who had his brights on (two Hella 4000's)... my H4+H1 conversions were brighter and illuminated more than his 2 Hella's.
That combo of headlights was bright enough I never felt the need to put rally lights on the car.
cegerer 02-02-2009, 12:58 PM I finally saw the car as I was leaving. Very, very cool. Love the graphics and all the detail work.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/114400/imgp0257sm.jpg">
Rally43 02-02-2009, 01:23 PM I saw the car also, but we were in the middle of a transit and he was heading into the stage we just left..Would have liked to get a closer look at the car... I use to run an 88 back in the early 90's, but sold it to a guy in Costa Rica..
