Sup guys, first time on this forum I usually hang in the UrS and CQ threads... As an enthusiast to other enthusiasts, I feel I should ask for your opinions.

Anyways, I can't believe I'm doing this but I think I am going to pull the trigger on this.

1983 UrQ WAUDC0854DA900065

The car is NOT running and from the looks of the pics, it will definitely need some work, though it is not in horrible shape... it is restorable.

Here are the "known" facts off the bat:
1. windshield cracked.
2. no keys
3. missing driver side door handle
4. dist cap missing
5. 79K ?? if odometer works. I have a feeling it does.
6. Rusty brakes
7. Undercarriage? Sunroof needs attention.
8. rust and dents on hood and pass front fender, but the remaining overall paint is in excellent condition. 8/8.5ish.
9. small dent (but no paint chip) on driver rear fender.
10. Interior needs attention but overall the door cards, carpet, dash, and seats were a 6 - 7, 8 on some spots.
11. Car has Mid 80s Cali plates. The only CARFAX record I brought up was the initial import in 1982. Clear as far as carfax is concerned.

After speaking w/ the sellers here's what I know: Been sitting for 4 or 5 years at this property. The property and UrQ are owned by an individual who is in jail for extended time. The "seller" is the party that's moving into his property (assuming payment? title i don't know that detail) and Owner has given verbal 'OK' for sellers to "dispose" the car. The party selling the vehicle are friends with the owner but they do not hold title nor does it seem like they want to go through the process themselves.

I had about a 1 hour conversation w/ one of the sellers, and he seems knowledgable on vehicle restores, however I could tell Audi's weren't his forte, though he knew what he was selling is rare.

He recommended to me (sounded like he had done something like this in the past) to do some type of Lien Sale on the vehicle. I looked it up on DMV.CA.GOV and I'm kinda confused by it.

Bottom line is, they need to move the car out of the property, but dont hold title. I would still have to get the cared towed off the lot, then i'd have to battle with CA DMV to figure out how to legally acquire the vehicle.

For now, I have put money down on the car, and we made a written agreement that I have 2 days to research this process. The down payment is refundable (in writing).

From an Audi lover to another, i can honestly say that my only intent is to restore, maintain, and moderately drive the car to special events. I dont plan on doing an SQ conversion or anything like that. Want to get it restored and on the road again, period. I would have hated to see it been parted out or sent off to the junkyard by these guys not knowing what they were letting go.

That being said, we closed the deal at UNDER $3000 and I still have time to "think" about how I would accomplish legally getting the vehicle transfered in my name.

So i'm looking for several things from you guys.

1. your honest take on the Price I'm paying vs. what work I may have ahead of me - I know thats hard to judge but assume the vehicle doesn't have any other issues than what i've listed and what you've seen in the pics.

2. what do you think of the DMV situation w/ the title and registered owner? is it worth the hassle? is there an "easy" way out?

3. If I pass on this deal, i would like to see someone from Cali or anyone here that's interested take a look at the vehicle because as I mentioned, it would be a shame to see this go, it is PERFECTLY restorable it just needs to get into the right hands.

Posting pics shortly.

HHHMMM VIN clearly makes it an 83 but 2/82 mfgr date, using June/June convention would make it an 82.

does that have on it's rarity if any? i noticed it has 5x112 hubs, I thought the UrQs were 4x100 for some reason.

...in 1983. The one your looking at is an early build 1983 with a build date of Feb. 1982. I also own one with a build date of Mar 1982. Last two digits in your VIN is the Production Number but that #65 means it got the 65th VIN but it doesn't mean it left Audi at #65 seeing these cars were hand assembled. Some teams of assemblers were quicker than others so that car could have been 65 or 63 or 70 depending on the team. Would have been a rare item if the 10th digit was a "C" meaning a titled 1982 with only 25 examples making it to N. America. Hubs are correct seeing the car sits on stock Ronal R8 7" rims

Later build 1983's may have had some changes but not much. I think tail end of 1984 models came with the newer fuse box and rolled rear fenders like the 1985's

Should you buy it? Of course you should. Body looks solid, and even though parts for these cars are becoming rare and even N/A, 4000q's, CGT's, 5000tq's, and 80/90's can be sourced for parts. Plus this forum and Audifans Urq list are super helpful.

If your planning to restore it and sell it for a profit you can forget it. Prices are still low in collector car circles but have seen increases as of late thanks to quattro turning 25 years and the auto press plus of course Ashes to Ashes show. But if you want a really cool car to dump a little money on Urq is that car. Its got innovation (Jeez it re-wrote the WRC book and Evo's WRX and calloway Escorts wouldn't exsist), great looking profile (at any angle) and they are super rare. Just buy it.

Also as for the title I know in Ohio you can let a car sit on your lot and file for abandoned title after like 30 days. Its kind of time consuming but you tell the DMV you want to file for the car and they have to send a letter to the owner. Then your allowed to charge storage atleast as a dealer and there is a maximum a day for that. Usually you never have to go that far as the owner of the title doesnt care or never gets the letter, responds etc. Anyway its tricky but worth it nice to see you saving one more of these from a terrible fate.

Someone with a 914 went thru something crazy in, I think it was, Cali. Owners mother sold the car because her son left it in her yard for 10 years. New owner picked up the car. Son got pissed and filed charges a year later, the new "owner" got arrested for stealing a car and went thru all sorts of court dealings. Eventually the son got his car back. There's a lot more to the story and I think there were some shady dealings on both sides. But just be careful. I don't want to see you sink some money and time into it, and have the guy get outta jail and come collect due to some loophole in the law. Best of luck. Looks better than I imagined. Not bad at all really. Also I wouldn't trust carfax at all. Not for a car that old. My car was clear under carfax. Not until the engine came out that I found wrinkles in the sheet metal and a dent where the trans had hit the tunnel...

Make sure once you get it towed home that you won't be arrested for having stolen property. What's the owner in jail for?

This was the car that sold on E-Bay last year I think November or so, I actually bid on the car. $3766.00 was the final bid I think? Story goes like this, the car was in a Barn for several years in Sonora California, or so the seller said so? There were several item missing from the distributor area, so this was not a drive off lot deal, more like take me home and sort trough me. I am about 175 miles from Sonora, so it was going to be worth the drive, and trailer back to my place back then. I'll see if I can produce some leads for you, I had the winning bidders e-mail address at one time I think? I contacted him after he out bid me. I decided in the end the price was not quite what the car was worth given that it was a go though car anyway, I think the winning bidder was from Oregon somewhere? The interior was ok, I can't remember the dash condition, I think the speakers in the dash were missing, typical for cars with early dashes around here to be cracked from the sun, I think the dash in this car was in good shape though... I own 900438 build date 5/82 almost had two at one point... Hey there is a RHD for sale in England, nice looking car, seats are mix matched, fair price for a RHD...?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=190219713029&Category= 9835&_trksid=p3907.m29</a
