Does anyone know if there is a good place to aquire the pentagon shaped tool used for the bolts in the front brake calipers? There are an abundance of places to shop locally, but I don't want to chase this thing down. I could make something that would work, but I would rather have the correct tool. I will say my Snap-On dealer has no idea what I am talking about.

Im not sure which ones you are talking about unless its a large allen head. Been a while since I looked at a set of G54's though.

Yep, 5 point pentagon. Don't tell me I've got an exception. I have never run up against one before. I am sure I can grind a large allen to into a 5 point, but I have seen the Girling 5 point pentagon tool for sale in England. Hoping to find something a bit closer to home.

I'll have to swing by Sears and see. I tried their website, but got frustrated with it. I've had good luck with NAPA for tools, have to try them too.

When you say "pentagon shaped tool used for the bolts in the front brake calipers", where exactly *are* these bolts that you are looking to undo?

On my urq, (that as far as I know, has the stock, single piston calipers), the calipers (slider pins) are held on with 'normal' hex 13mm head bolts. Same way as most Audi's are done..

If you are talking about the caliper carriers, again, they are held on with (bigger) hex head bolts. Again, nothing special there.

So maybe you *do* have something odd, or perhaps something non-stock. Special brake parts installed by a previous owner perhaps?

In other words, it's not only the SnapOn dealer that doesn't know what you are talking about! :-)

What I am trying to do is break this thing down to rebuild. I looked into replacing it, but I dont know about the quality. Thought I would give a try at rebuilding it first. I was going to break it all down, clean it up, and repaint everything, but now I am wondering, why bother? I took some pics and will post them tommorow night if anyone is still curious. If your wondering what kind of tool I am imagining check out this ebay ad:

from a newer Audi. 83 rear brakes aren't too great anyway from a parts perspective.

I can't remember exactly what I used on my 83, but its was later style 4000 rear calipers with different newer E brake cables and carriers.

Ahhh!

Ok, now that makes more sense.

Me, I'd suggest that if you don't have any specific reason to pull the halves apart, then don't. If you can get the piston out, without parting the halves, then you should be OK. Other than that, I can't think of any reson that you'd *really* have to pull the halves aaprt.

In fact, In my TR6 shop manual, they suggest that you DON'T take the halves apart, as new crush washers for the joint are not available as a separate item. These calipers may be the same..?

I think your probably on to something. I didn't consider the crush washer. Thanks for the thoughts.

Actually, these are for the fronts. The rears are all standard fare as far as hardware goes. I am considering an all around upgrade in the future. Nothing really exotic, just converting to other Audi parts like you suggest. Another member has given me a run down on a set up he really likes. Still on my mind. But I will likely keep the stock set up for a little while longer and slowly accumulate all the other parts. I've torn into a few things on the car right now, and have to keep the mod-bug on a bit of a leash so I don't end up with a completely disasembled car, and believe me, I am on my way. I still have a bone stock engine, so uber-stoppers are not really critical right now.

I re-read your post, and I may just do that for the rears after all. Same disc right? Any proportioning tricks required, or is it just a matter of swapping out the calipers?
