Do you want a road version or one set up for racing?
I have no idea who these guys are, just came across it looking through Hemmings for restoration tips.

Hemmings Advertisement

the S1 had tons of power, but all at top end. Plus, with the braking and suspension tecnology out there, it's a tough call. I, for one, would like to see a shoot out though!

The competition had caught up to the AWD revolution, and mid-engined, space-frame Lancias and Peugeots were proving more than a match for the nose-heavy beast.

The sporty definitely has a power advantage, but, depending on the venue, its compromised handling is a big handicap.

the S1 got pretty damn close to 50-50.
IMO Throw in some electronic active differentials and a full SMG transmission and I bet it would beat the modern WRC cars EASILY. With 600 hps and 900 kgs it'll have almost a 200% power to weight advantage.

Most modern rally suspensions are still Mcpherson strut at heart.

I thought it was a lot more than $175k though, maybe I'm thinking of another car.

the purpose built rally car that Audi prototyped and would have built had Group B not gotten out of hand. While the "adapted from production" cars are nice, a real no holds barred rally car would be incredible. IMO, the RS200 will always be the ulimate production rally car. FWIW, in that collection with the Audi racecars that ended up at the Imperial Palace, there were also three RS200s, including an EVO model with only 9km (6 miles) on the clock. Awesome machine...

BTW, it is too bad that last year's (2004) Pikes Peak Hillclimb got shortened. Seeing Stig pilot that insane RS200 all the way up would have been incredible. The turbo on that car was the largest that I have ever seen on a car. The inlet was at least 6".

RS200 Evolution

Given the opportunity, I'd take ANY Group4 or GroupB car.

How did the S1 get so close? Throwing accessories out back and judicial use of composites helps, but it's nothing like mounting the lump inside the wheelbase. Audi saw the writing on the wall and was headed that way, but that would've taken them far away from the street cars.
The power advantage is strictly a rules thing. The FISA allowed it to get crazy, which ultimately caused Group B to implode. The modern cars are pretty sophisticated, but limited by the rules. We know companies like Renault can make some awesome power if they're cut loose.
I'll say it again: the S1 wasn't all that dominant over its contemporaries. It's certainly got a power advantage, but we all know rally is much more than straight line accel.

Of course, I'm still an Audi guy. I respect the fact that the competition cars were never that far removed from the street. For me, the urq is the ultimate expression of Audi's rally effort. I wouldn't turn down a shorty in any form, but to me, historically, they were just a band-aid to stop the bleeding. Just MHO, tho.

Dialynx in the UK have done a fair number of SQ replica's. Still not cheap, but may be considerably cheaper than a real sport.
