I have seen the (I think tan) leatherette for the 1.8 and was not really impressed. I was wondering how the black leatherette compared to the black leather in the 2.8. (or the Passat) Never seeing the leatherette in Black, I wasen't sure if it looked any differnt or not. Thanks.

It has been awhile since I have seen it, but the black looked a bit harsh to me. I like the satin cloth much better...

Looks great? I constantly get comments on it. Very easy to take care of. Not hot in summer etc, etc. Very comfortable. Feels "softer" than leather if that makes any sense.

Yea, I keep on going between the A4 and Passat. Almost bought a 96 2.8 stick Q which I really loved. Just ran out of warranty though. Aghh. The only 98 I have seen with the option I want has the brown leatherette, and I did not personally like it. It'll be another couple of weeks till my Passat comes in so I am still going to look for a good deal on a 98. Looking for a Red or Silver 98, loaded. Thanks for the replies. Later >

I love my black leatherette...people think it's leather, but i PERSONALLY think it's more comfortable than the leather in the 2.8...as RobS mentioned..easy to clean unlike leather and you don't have to worry as much when you put stuff on your seats (boxes, etc...)...very durable stuff...this debate comes up all the time..just check the archives i'm sure there's TONS on this. but nevertheless, it's up to you...
Jason
98.5 1.8T pearlescent

I hopped into my car one day and forgot that I put my work badge in my back pocket. It put a small scratch in the seat. About 2 inches long, almost tore it. Soooo be careful. I'm still kicking myself and trying to find a fix

I think it looks fantastic. I'd personally like it to be a *bit* more grey (like a boxster graphite grey), but I cannot complain. I have owned the car for nearly 3 months now and it is definitely NOT as soft as leather, but, judging by what other people say, that might change.
Either way, this was a major bother when I was buying my 1.8T...being forced to go without real leather. Now, however, I am quite certain that I'd stick with the leatherette and save the money. I love it and highly recommend it.
--frank
PS: It still does get somewhat hot in the summer, so I imagine black would be even worse in that regard. So, IMO, it's a draw for that aspect in the leatherette vs. leather debate.

It was black and with red exterior it was very sporty and looked cool. I eventually bought one with cloth though, so I can not tell you about the long term value.
