I am looking for a UR-Quattro to tinker with and attemt to keep on the road. I currently have an 85 CGT but am looking for something more. Anybody know of any cars out there for sale for under $4000 that are running and/or salvagable. I am very interested in finding a car. Also what are common problem areas with the Ur-Quattros???
Thanks for the help,

I know a guy that just bought an 83 urq with R8 wheels on it, a Scorpion exhaust and nearly perfect body and interior for $4000. He was driving it from CT to CO. Haven't heard yet how his trip went. Also, try and find a nice urq. A "rough" one will cost you MEGA dollars to fix up. Check the Audifans marketplace. There seem to be a proliferation of urqs on it the past month or two.

Where do they usually rust and what are other common problems, also is a Ur-Quattro realistic as a daily driver. I live in VT and drive dirt (now snow) roads every day so i really want the quattro but not if it means i am gonna miss school fixing it on a regular basis. Are they much worse then the 5000tq's???

...20 YO cars are like that. ANY 20 YO cars, not just ur-Quattros. If you found a pristine example, and drove "sanely", you might be able to limit the maintanace costs. I highly doubt it though.

I have a gt coupe now and have had a 5000tq and have been able to keep up with them fairly easily. Are the Ur-Quattros really that much more of a handfull???

Then you're probably crazy enough to buy a URQ. LOL I'm just kidding.
Coupe GTs are pretty reliable from what I've seen. But 5000TQs can be a real pain, but at least they have easily available parts and a more standardized construction. Many of the things on a UrQ aren't very prototypical and factory line like the 5000TQ. They're handbuilt so each one might be a bit different.
Common rust spots are low on the frame where the water that gets behind the door drains. and at the crown under the hood by the shock pillars. Galvanizing varies from car to car.. So some can be completely galvanized with no rust while others can be completely rusted out requirind an entire new floorpan.

I have seen a retired rally ur-quattro on ebay a while back around your budget. Try to look into ebay once a while. But keep in mind, you might end up pay a lot more than you anticipate to invest. Good luck in searching.

My name is Jim and I'm the guy gmbchef is talking about. I picked up a nice '83 for $4K with some nice stuff on it, and 113K miles. Most of the annoying maintainence was already done on the car, but it needed new front brakes, had a few vacuum leaks, etc. etc. All told it cost me another $1300 with Greg Hayman at Auto Firme to make her XCountry worthy.....but I made it nicely, and am the new proud owner of this baby. I'll post some pics as soon as I can.....
I do still worry a little that it's not making the power it should......I'll post it on another thread though.
BTW, Gary, I made it back here in two days..... the car was still a blast even though there is more power to be had somewhere.....too much backpressure right now for some reason. Anyway, take it easy.....
