Hi,
I am interested in purchasing an Audi Ur-quattro. One has recently come up for sale in my area, but when I went to go test drive it, there seemed to be many things wrong. The floor was rusted through, their were vacuum leaks, etc. However, what bothered me most was when I would turn the car, even at low speeds, there would be this grinding, almost vibrating feel. The car is not supposed to feel like that, right? It feels almost like when I try turning the wheels too far on my current car and the tires rub against the wheel wells(my current car is a Renault 5 Turbo, any of you guys familiar with that car?), only it does it even when you turn the steering wheel just a little bit. Could it be powersteering problem, suspension problem, drivetrain problem? It seemed like the car was probably not taken care of very well. If this is a common problem, let me know. I also found a nice one that is maybe 2 or 3 hundred miles away, claiming absolutely no rust. Any input would be appreciated

...It seems that rust is a very common problem on these cars. It's almost unavoidlable on a car that's been left outside for long priods over its lifetime. The rest of it sounds like general neglect to me. Seems like the owner didin't take care of the car.

snoogins70, you were the car I was talking about being about 300 miles away. I live in the Detroit, MI area. I left you a message on your voicemail. Is there any rust on the underbody or anything like that? Was the car driven in the winter? I left my number, so give me a call when you can.

I agree, although I would like to see all of the neglected urq's restored, that would take more money that any 3rd world country could afford.
I on the other hand bought my 85' with a restoration in mind.
It needs some attention, and some money put into it, but it's in pretty good shape for being as neglected as it is.( a little rust here and there which has been already dealt with.)

That grinding/ vibraring could be the center diff being locked. I believe that if you lose vacuum to the switch, it will lock itself.
