as the subject line says this is my first post!
Been lurking for quite some time now, so it is about time I contributed to the board!
I have been a long time Audi/VW enthusiast (read nut), and in addition to an '01 TTC 225, I also have an '83 ur-q in the statble... I thought it would be interesting to compare the two!
ur-q
What can I say about this car, I find it so exciting to drive. Up till recently this was my daily driver and track-day toy. Mods include tweeked wastegate, bleeder valve to raise boost, SDS Additional Injector controller, 2 x 44lbs supplemental fuel injectors, hard intercooler piping, upgraded intercooler, Forge 006 with washers, 2bennet 4 row radiator, Koni Yellows, 2bennet coil-over conversion with 325F/300R Eibach 2.5" linear rate springs, blau 22mm rear sway bar, blau delrin control arm bushings all around, G60 brakes, carbotech panther plus brake pads all around, Willwood proportioning valve, Scorpion full stainless 70mm exhaust, "euro" downpipe, OEM Ronals with snows, 16x8 BBS RS w/ 225/40/16 Toyo T1 for street, 17x8 BBS RVII w/ 225/45/17 Khumo Escta V700 r-compound for track, corner ballanced, topped off with Autometer boost and A/F ratio guages.
Although the car is now 19 years old, it still drives great and gives many modern cars a run for their money on the track! Old-school turbo lag, with a big whack of torque when the hair-dryer spools. It thrills on many levels, and can be exhausting to drive because of all the aural and tactile feedback... This one is a keeper!
TT
I recently purchased an '01 TT 225 coupe (5-spokes, xenon, Bose), and I must say that I have been very happy with the car. It continues to impress with the high level of sophistication and luxury! :D
I originally intended to keep this car "stock", however the mod bug has caught me off guard and after a quick visit to H2 sport in Georgetown, the car now has a GIAC X-Chip, and Forge 007p. With the x-chip, the car has really come alive. The smoothness of the power delivers is amazing. VAG-COM has been a great tool as well.
Comparison
To me the TT is a perfect grand touring car. Smooth power, good brakes, decent handling, great ride. TT does have a bad case of understeer though. Gorgeous interior and an exterior that begs to be stared at. The audiophiles may lynch me, but I love the stereo (this is comparing to the original 2watt cassette deck in the ur-q!). And A/C that actually works!! For daily commuting or long trips, the TT wins hands down.
Because of the mods to my ur-q, a direct performance comparison is not really fair... in a straight line, the chipped TT will pull away from the ur-q (especially from a standstill), but once the wheel has to be turned it is a different story. I don't mean to cause a huge flame war, but IMHO the AWD system in the ur-q is superior to the Haldex. It is far more predictable to me, especially when driving aggressively. To put this into context, I prefer the ur-q AWD system to even Torsen equipped cars.
Way less body roll in the ur-q, and lots more grip. However the ur-q ride is punishing on long drives.
Anyhow, seems like there are lots of friendly, helpful and mature ppl on this board! Can't wait to get to know some of you!
