1983 Coupe Quattro with the 10V turbo or
the 1990 Coupe Quattro with the 20V turbo.

When the 20V turbo was introduced, Owners of the Original Quattro used the "Ur" term to distinguish the old from the new. So a UrQuattro specificially is the 1983-85 coupe. The TQC could refer either the model.

The same thing is happening with the S4. The S4 is the year 2002-2003 modified A4. The UrS4/S6 is the 1993-95 modified 200 body.

The URQ, aka TQC, was built from 1980 to 1991, the last 3 years with the 20v turbo, and only 82-86 coming to North America. The 90 Coupe quattro, had a non turbo 20v motor here in the states, and in Europe, hed the 20v turbo.

What some call the Turbo Quattro Coupe, which is NOT an official name, but rather a more descriptive name for the car, is actually the original (ur auf Deutsch) quattro. The car was simply the quattro (small case, as opposed to Quattro, which is/was a trademarked software program). Originally, there was no quattro "system", just the quattro car. Later on Audi decided to refer to quattro as the four wheel drive system, as used in the quattro. Sooo, really it's just a quattro, no ur, no Turbo - Coupe, just quattro. Now, everyone on Audiworld claims to have a "quattro" so we need some way to differentiate. Does this make sense?

In '90, Audi sent the Quattro Coupe (20V, naturally aspirated) to the US. From that car they built the S2 (in Europe) with the same 20V turbo engine (essentially) as that used in the 20V quattro. Later, the S2 got a six speed and distributorless ignition engine (like in the S4/S6s of the time) with a bit more torque and hp. They had Porsche tweak that engine, brakes and chassis in a 90 Avant body and called it the RS2, which is thought of as the ultimate serial production I5 powered Audi, except maybe for the Sport, which had less hp...

HTH!

Even cleared things up for me. So I have a Turbo quattro er, a Quattro, I mean quattro coupe, *no* a Urquattro. Yeah thats the ticket. A Urquattro!

Seriously, after reading urq20vt's answer I realized mine really sucked.

It is my understanding that quattro is lower case to describe everything except the ur-q/tqc because that was the true Quattro. They sort of "retired" the name Quattro out of respect.

I don't believe it had to do with the software issue. I'm pretty sure I've read this as well.

There are other situations where the same name can be used for different products that are in different markets. How about the Hyundai Excel and Microsoft Excel? Or is it a Hyundai excel? ;P

You sure you mean Coupe quattro "turbo"? Sounds like an S2 to me.

The Coupe quattro didn't have a turbo from the factory, altho' it was a 20v and I agree that it was probably one of the reasons for "ur" to begin being used to describe the Quattro.

What I read was that "quattro" was used with the small "q" just because thats the way the engineers and designers wanted it.
