NOTE: It is recommended that you listen to the music provided in the link while reading, it adds to the enjoyment.

Trogdor's wheel bearing went from silent, to "what the hell is a lion doing loose in Illinois!" loud. In only 300 miles, it got bad, to where the bearing was gaining on the engine in terms of droning noise.

So I stopped in Urbana before I spun the bearing and burnt up my hub, and really stranded myself. They actually have the parts here, so in about 2 hours, I will be on the road..... cross your fingers!

the big one thats sunk into the trunk.. i'd take a look at that, i think its supposed to be sealing around the underbody.. my '84's all rusted around that plug and when i drive in rain/snow, the right side of the trunk fills up with water because that plug's missing

maybe its supposed to be like that, but like i said, mines all rusted there and so the plugs gone, so i couldn't really tell ya how its supposed to be.. just dont want your trunk to turn into a fish tank ;-)

"This is an '84? Where in the hell did you find this? A barn? I have NEVER seen a car this clean... including newer ones!"

Good thing I stopped, as the wheel bearing was just starting to spin in the hub. Hub is undamaged, and the first, and only wheel bearing in Urbana was bad. One is being sent from Indianapolis, and will be here in Urbana tomorrow morning.

It was divine providence, as I probably wouldn't have gotten farther than 200 miles down the road. And the guy fixing it has a beat up Quantum Syncro, so he knows (theoretically) what he's doing.

So, I'm staying at the La Quinta on I-74, have in-room movies (haven't seen "No Country for Old Men" yet!), the mall is next door, and I'm on freakin vacation!

Your theme song for the night, courtesy of Trogdor

I guess I could barely hear it when I drove it. Nice to have somebody work on your car that is somewhat familiar with how things work, huh?

Glad you got it to a shop though, that was a smart move.

Solo - That's a great ride. I just got one too: 84 4000s quattro. Are you participating in the 24 hours? I'll try to post some pics later.

I was sitting in the coffee shop "Espresso Royale" at the U of I, and I was looking at the map. I decided that the roaring was a bit too much, especially across Bum F-E, and had Midas check it. Good thing too as the racers were starting to turn and might have burnt up the hub before I reached St. Louis!

I would have put you up for the night, we could have pulled that off, taken it up to my buddys garage (he gets 3 times daily WorldPac deliveries) and had you up and going pronto.

Hindsight...

was about $1000 less, I'd have driven it rather than what I did. But, at $800 vs $3500, it wasn't a hard decision for "Mr. Cheapskate".

And, if it had a V8 I'd have given at least $5k for a car like that.

it sounds like a good time. Where are the Tucson folks meeting up, at the restaurant right?

And I know, I know, I'm ALWAYS the slowest one there! :) I could bring the Volvo instead, and be fast until it breaks down! :P

Congrats on your car. Kind of nice driving a almost new 25 year old car that still has everything in working order.
