If you speak German, 1 day ahead is sufficient, 2-3 days is recommended. If you speak only English, be sure to call one to two months in advance. They have to line up enough people to make sure it is worth running in English.
I can't speak for the English tour, I went through the German one by choice and it was GREAT!
