Met up with Larry and his friend Steve this morning to help diagnose and hopefully cure his non starting 86 4kq. The problem was this, the car wouldnt start! They said the car wasnt getting any fuel, so we did some checking and I thought the car had enough fuel. They had checked for spark and said there was spark. The car should start, right? :) Steve suggested we pull the plugs out, which I did. I found an immediate problem, the PO had put in Bosch Platinums!! WRONG! These silly things are horrible, never use them ;). Along with the bad plugs, the cap AND rotor were totally shot.
Pretty much a minor tuneup of plugs/cap/rotor was all this puppy needed. Took lots of starter action to clear the cylinders of all the fuel, but it eventually started and ran great. We then took the car for a short spin (through a huge warehouse!) and found that the idle was super high. I figured it was the ISV, and I was close, there was a huge vac leak. Got that fixed and all was good for having the car run correctly.

Another sick 4kq back on the road :). Oh, and when we left, Larry wanted to have a small drag race against the 4ktq to see how theh 4kq matched up. It was almost even through a first few gears, but once I hit 3rd and 4th it was over :).

It was great having Mike show up! Someone with 4KQ experience was definitely helpful.

Mike, thanks again! It was great meeting you (again!). Ironically enough, we meet again when I have an AWD sedan (a little different animal from my Galant VR4).

Car is driving well. Mike's car has inspired me to put some ca$h into some body work! :)

The Bosch Platin F5DP0R version is very popular in the S4 model.

The 4kq for some reason just doesnt like the quad electrode plugs, let alone platinums. Some cars do, of course, just depends on many things that I dont know about :).

Until the Audi tech pointed them out to me. Add that to the fact that when I got my 4kq I could barely go over 80mph, and the accelleration (while still slow, was horrible).

I run only stock plugs in both vehicles, or ones that cross reference properly, or even the "optional" ones listed for the car.

I dont know many people that have had success with platinums, but if you have, great! :)

The multi-gap plugs need more spark voltage to get the same "fire" across multiple gaps - which you'd get out of a newer electronic ignition. All this does is expose the weaknesses in a poorly tuned car as AudiSport fixed. I also drive a Volvo 850 Turbo and IPD and other specialist shops recommend NKGs or Bosch copper core in those engines for the same reason. If you want to run these kinds of plugs you need to go to a hotter coil and upgraded wires.

The four electrode he's talking about are far different from these plugs:

4 elctrodes vs 1.

The Platins are quite nice. Both the centre and side electrode are platinum. So no need for four electrodes. :-p
