I think Im at the same spot I was a few years ago when I gave up trying to replace this thing.
I got the plastic cover off, as well as the top one. I see no screw around the immediate area of the switch to remove it. I did remove a large allen screw that allows me to pull the whole assembly toward me, then it stops.
Whats the trick here? Im obviously missing something...

I pulled the steering wheele off, along with the turn signal and wiper arms and the 2 plastic peices that wrap around the column. As I rember once you are that far you should be able to pull the switch out of the back of the metal casing.

If you could post up a pic of your progress I could probally be of more assistance. I do not remember it being very difficult.

After talking with Frank via the phone and doing some of my own testing with his help, it looks like the switch is fine, but the starter is toast! This comes as no surprise, the starter has been doing odd things for years, it just decided to take a dump at the wrong time :).
I was poking around and there is a "trap" door on the side of the lock cylinder that looks like it pops off to give access to maybe a screw or something for the switch. Hmmm..
There is no way from looking at the back of the switch, that there are any screws back there.

So you didn't have to remove the ignition switch then?
