View Full Version : How much extra power does the 1.8T make for a temp drop?

When I purchased my 99.5 1.8TQ in July, it felt good. Now the temperature is consistently lower (40-60 def F) the engine feels very strong. Does anyone have hp/torque numbers for lower ambient temps?

...that the hp/torque figures that Audi publishes are the max. So, at warmer temps your car is probably making LESS than 150 hp & 155 lb/ft.

published HP is at ambient temp and humidity. Figure plus or minus 1hp for every 10 degrees under/over ambient temp.

I forgot the exact numbers that are considered ambient, but offhand i think its 70 F and humidity at 28% or something like that.

Not every single 1.8T makes 150hp. Production tolerances can vary HP somewhat, and it can be that any particular engine will see somewhere between 145-155hp. Not only that, but HP will peak at different rpm's as well. Remember when Ford changed the rating for their 5.0 HO motor to 215hp instead of 225hp? No changes were made to the engine, but instead of showing the maximun HP typically seen, they decided to show the mean HP.

Not saying your wrong...but my observations have been much different. I really doubt a 4 or 5 horsepower gain is going to make someone comment that the car feels MUCH stronger.

I chock it up to engine knock control. During colder weather the fuel is cooler and the intake temps drop substantially...the timing retard will be far lower than on say a 90F day where you're dumping hot gas and even hotter air charge into the cylinder...things which don't help the car in term of perpensity to ping.

My car feels like a beast when it's cold out...runs pretty damn good when it's warm too, but I can tell it will ping mildly in hot weather and as a result you take a performance punch...a serious one. In the cold the car makes not a single tick...and shreds the tires a good ways through second gear...so explain that...I doubt it's those extra 5 ponies from your linear model of Hp Vs temp, maybe that's for a NA motor.
