come on... i know there has to be some druggies out there! ;-)
no but really, a limited slip differential... i searched and got a thread about it but i wanted to ask about different companies also.
quaife is the obvious contender with their 1300 dollar kit, but i've only found ones for quattro. anything for us FWD 4k'ers?
does phantom grip make a conversion kit for our cars, and is it any good?
and i have also heard of peloquin, any good?
thanks for the input guys and gals. and dont anyone dare say i dont have enough power to need a LSD. technically i probably dont have enough power to be on the interstate either ;-)

The only diff you can replace(with a quaife, anyway) in the 90q is the front, which is open.

I don't see why the coupe one would be too terribly different. Of course, I know very little about the coupe.

But nobody lists one for the center or rear. The front, on the other hand, would benefit greatly from a Quaife or Phantom Grip setup.

Not sure if they can be adapted to our 4 or 5 cylinder transmissions, though. I seem to remember someone on this board is running a Phantom Grip, but I don't recall him saying anything more about it. Quaife is always a good choice, if you're willing to pony up the cash. But, sadly, Quaife doesn't list a diff for the 4 cylinder 4000(assuming you're shopping for your car). Come to think of it, nobody else does, either. If you find something, though, make sure I'm the first to know about it.

and he said that he has nothing for my 4000 :( so sad. doesn't sound like he was willing to see even how different it is than a VW, i'm sure it can't be that much different
on another note, phantom grip sells a kit for the FWD 4000 for $300, but is listed as a "custom" part number. which means it may be hard to get a hold of. worth a shot if i had $300 lying around!

On most VWs, the output flanges are held in place by circlips. On the 4k, they're bolted to the diff. I'm pretty sure the longitudinal diff is bigger, too.

But Purple microdot was pretty good as well...

Trippy mind bending stuff, best to be avoided.
But the Quaife I have in my 84 CGT turbo is awesome. Aside from the MC motor itself, it's one of the best upgrades I've got on the car. I've been running it for almost 2 years (no problems) and it really helped tame the torque steer a FWD turbo car makes. Also pulls you through turns like never before.
Now I never had it in the car before the turbo, and can't rightly say the car needed it in stock trim. If you plan on making more HP in the future though, it's worth having LSD of some sort. But it'd be overkill otherwise IMO.

i've already got all the plans and parts worked out to slap a turbo on my engine in the spring.
so you say you have it on your 1984 FWD? do you know if my 81 4000 FWD is any different than your 84. I emailed quaife and they replied with :
"Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, we do not know if any of the current Audi offerings would be applicable to your FWD 4000 since we have never test fitted one in that application."
so they don't know... can you tell me which kit you got, and a part number perhaps? any midifications necessary to get it to fit/work? thanks

The 5 cylinder has a different tranny as far as I know. I don't have the P/N# offhand, but it's the same part for the Porsche 924/944 IIRC.
You may try cross checking with a VW tranny P/N.
Good luck.

I've already done extensive research on this with regard to the longitudinal 1.8 transmissions. The only diffs that interchange are from other longitudinal 1.8 transmissions. If anyone picked up on something I missed, or knows something I don't, please don't hesitate to correct me. I'd love to have a limited slip in my car.

http://forums.audiworld.com/4000/msgs/49426.phtml</a
