I've seen others remark about the dash lights run whether or not headlights are on...
My 2000 does not--only the odometer, clock and computer info is illuminated; no gauges----can't find any details in the manual----any ideas? other 2000 owners?
Did it change with the white numerals?

As above. I noticed this when driving through a tunnel and the white dash instrument morphed gradually to red! Was kinda cool actually as each time I passed under one of the tunnel's overhead lights the dash's white showed through again...red ->white ->red ->white -> etc.
The red backlit console switches only com on when the headlights (or parking lights) are selected ON.

I'm guessing that this is what the dash panel looks like inside the 2000 model of A4:

This sort of ruins the all-red-spaceship-driving-experience at night, doesn't it?
Nevertheless, it's still an A4!

Dash lights on my 2000 A6 are always on. I live in a city where you don't expect to see sun between Oct and May but instead rain galore, so it's easy to tell whether the lights are on or not.
Oh, my '00 A6 is an early build (7/99) with red dash lighting and analog clock, so the 'always-on' feature may go with these 'older-style' dash lighting (A6 also changed to white backlighting and digital clock in 2000, but not mine).
2000 is all red except for numbers/alpha on gauges, which are white----radio/climate, all rest red.
white dials on the gauges---JUST WHITE NUMERALS!
