I test drove a Passat 1.8T manual today to get a feel for the 1.8T engine (my local Audi dealer here in Maryland didn't have a manual-shift A4 1.8 to try). I also wanted to give the Passat a chance.

The Passat seemed, well, sluggish. :( Also had turbo lag.

Would an A4 1.8T QMS have more zip? Or maybe "feel" faster?

I believe the 2WD A4 is about .1 faster and the Quattro A4 about .2 slower.

Checked with my local dealer (in Rockville, MD) about chipping. The service manager explained it this way: we have an obligation both to the customer and to Audi. We have to let Audi know if the car is modified, and Audi takes a dim view of chips.

Think I'll wait a year, and check out the new Lexus IS300. Or maybe that will prompt Audi to increase power output. :)
