While back the clutch was giving me problems, then the problems stopped... Now3rd and 4th dont work, but 1st, 2nd, and 5th (and reverse) work fine. But, if i droip to fourth n click up quickly 3rd will work (sometimes)... Im figuring the internal shift linkage is crapped out, Also when in gear, sounds almost like scraping if u let off on the gas n let the gears slow the car down... any insight?

Synchro's cpould be junk. I've got a similar problem on my 86 4k. Mine didn't give me any problems until the gearbox failed. Now It's jammed in third. Try this, Pop the hood and look at where the tranny meets the block (it's tight with all the hoses and wires). On top, slightly to the passenger's side is the exterior linkage set up. Look and see if there is something jamming it up or if its loosely connected. If it's fine, then its internal. If you plan to pull the tranny out, you might as well replace in with a used one or reconditioned unit. Quattro gearboxes rarely go bad so a used one should be cheap (force5auto has them at $150).Its a labor intensive job so a good Audi mechanic will charge between $600-1000 depending on his rate. My Mechanic wants $700 including the new (used) tranny.

If it turns out not to be the linkage (I doubt that it is if it's making noise while it's in gear), I have a couple of good used transaxles. I'm located in Maryland.
