Unexplained Absence

Car makin funny noises, not sure what it is. Between 1000 and 2000 rpm it makes a sorta squeeling sound, then when it gets to between 2100 and 2200 rpm it makes a wugga wugga wugga sound. I just replaced the voltage regulator, and when I was driving home the battery light and break light flashed for just a fraction of a second when i hit a bump. Could I need a new alternator or belt? Could I have made the alternator belt to tight or does it matter? Please help.

Oh ya the sounds started right after I replaced the voltage regulator. As soon as I turned the car on.

Thanks

Ian

im not sure what you mean by wuga wuga but a alternator belt can make that sqeeling sound, with the alternator the tighter the better imo, try dabbing some oil on the alternator belt with the dip stick when its running.

lights coming on when you hit a bump may be a loose ground.

are you sure you connected everything correctly?
if the sounds started immediately after the work, maybe something went wrong while doing the job? did a brush fall inside the alternator? did you pull the alternator to install the regulator? you might try disconnecting the belt and see if the noise is gone, if so you've narrowed it down.

I agree with 4k on this one. Those brushes can be a PITA to line up properly and might be skewed at an odd angle. Better take it out and check it again. If that doesn't fix it take it in and get the alternator checked.
