hey guys, anyone know what the redline is on an 86 coupe gt? The digi dash goes up to 7000 Rpm but has no discernable redline markings...
..My coupe runs out of power at just over 5000 Rpm, and will not rev any higher, not even in second or third. Top speed is in the high 80's after a loooong straight run. I realize these cars are not rockets but trouble hitting 90? there has to be something wrong. the car has good low end torque and runs well other than slight hesitation between 1000-1500 rpm.
Any ideas on what to check... or is this something I need to get used to?

Mine seems to redline at 6800 to 7000 and ad doing over 90 isnt a problem i dont know what is wrong but i have heard that it might be a cutoff switch on the fuel intake might be something to look at good luck hope i helped.

technically the 2.22 Liter 5 cylinder redlines at 6200 rpm. 80's seems really low, since i have mine to about 95 every time i get on the interstate with hardly a push.

I'd bet somebody accidently put the relay for the 1.8ltr 4 cylinder in your car...

If someone put the wrong relay in (4 cylinder relay) then the engine will die (totaly quit) at just under 5000rpm. To test this you want to rev the engine with no-load and see that it will rev over 5000rpm. If it goes higher than it does with a load or it goes over 5500, it isn't the relay. Again you will know when the relay cut-out kicks in, the engine will come to a complete shut-down until the revs go below the cut-out point.

I know because I have made that mistake on my 4kQ. It felt like it had a governor on it, set at 4800rpm.
