Im curious to know if its safe to take my 3spd on trips. I never have, considering it revs at 4000 or so on the highway. And at that rpm range, it could possibly go through oil at a quicker pace. The car itself is in great shape, no mechanical problems since ive had it. Any information is greatly appreciated!

German cars are generally built to withstand long distance high speed driving...
My car(88 5000 3 SPD auto)revs at about 3800 RPMs at 75-80 MPH and I've taken a couple of 6HR+ trips with no problems. Of course I'm a firm believer in preventative maintainece, so I never take it on a trip if I know somethings wrong with the car!
If you've got problems with oil consumption, just stop and check it every 100 miles or so...
If your car is in good shape like you say, everything should be OK. Just check out all the normal things like tire pressure, oil level, etc before you start your trip...

my 87 4000s revs between 34-3800rpms at highway speeds with no problems at all. Many smaller engines get better fuel milage running at a bit higher rpms rather than lugging along at low speeds. With smaller valves and lighter moving parts the rpms are not a problem. The motorcycles i've owned (600cc-1200cc) all rev between 4500-8000 rmp at highway speeds. it's fine. t
