I found a 1986 white coupe GT, manual, sunroof, worn out red leather interior. I have not examined the car closely yet , but the guy said itdoes not work because the computer is not getting any power from the car or something like that.
I need to know if anybody knows anything about this type of problem.
Also if you can tell me other big things to look out for on a car like this. The guy said he would like to get $250. Ifigure I would try $150. The leather shows its age and the car has two rather large dents.

I may just take the rims or go Demolition with it.

What are your "Big Picture" intentions with the car? Full restoration? Or just something to drive
as a spare?

These as with any Audi have their quirks. From what I've seen the ones "well" taken care of are worth it. The ones which have been abused and neglected will cost you lots-O-cash just to get running & keep running!

You do your own Audi repair? Have several other than dealership parts sources?

I owned a 1986 "CE"Audi Coupe GT for 13+ years.
Replaced almost every part on the car in those 13 years. It showed its age with cracks and rust in areas you wouldnt consider. I took very good care of the car too! Plus it was totaled 3 times and rebuilt from the ground up 3 times.

If you have the time & money, it may be a hobby for ya? But from how you describe, it sound like its been abused & neglected.

Cracks and rust...totalled 3 times...see a connection here?
I've had my CGT nearly 10 years, only prbs I've had were fuel pump (replaced with used), wheel bearings (common), broken exh stud (common) and bad window regulators (common, and caused by bad window guides). I yanked the original engine out at 135,000 or so only to put in a NG I had built. Nothing wrong with the KX. Guess I'm taking issue with the reliability question.
Granted, it isn't as maintenance free as my wife's Subaru, but it sure is more fun to drive.
But, I will agree that a 'bad' one that has been abused/neglected will likely be a money pit.
Only rust on mine (and I live in the rust belt) was the spare wheel well. Fixed easily in a day. I've had the complete interior out to install the roll bar, and the drivetrain removed, and haven't seen any other probs.
Hope I don't sound testy, I just really like these cars :)

If you saw the level of repair work done on the car during these rebuilds, you would not connect to 2 at all. The rebuilds were "better than factory". 2 of the rebuilds were cosmetic. 1 involved the left rear quarter. These rebuilds were caused by people running into my Coupe. Twice rear ended, once side swiped. I never had an accident which I caused driving the Coupe.

The cracks were caused by my SCCA cornering, and the coil-over suspension with front and rear anti-sway bars! Rust began in very unusual places
never involved in any of the repairs. I had seen several other Coupes, in high humidity/rain areas
suffering the same rust problems.

My Coupe spent the majority of its life out in the open, ungaraged, in the Coast of the Carolinas. Hurricanes and all!

I loved the Coupe, wish I had another, especially a Coupe Quattro Turbo!

Where did you get the rust probs? Would be helpful to keep an eye out...
Also, curious about the cracks. Split welds? This I can see with the suspension setup you had; no car is exempt from that. That's why rally and race cars get seam welded. I'll just keep welding mine back together until I can buy a TT as cheap as I bought my CGT!

Rust started appearing on the lower portions of the doors, from the inside out. Also near the central ground by drivers left knee. My engine firewall cracked, where the clutch master cylinder is, allowing rust, and finally the clutch master cylinder broke through the firewall.
The forward "C" pillar was also rusting from the inside out. Several areas inside the trunk too!
Seemed every time I found a spot another would appear. The cracks were on surrounding metal near the 2 front strut towers. Also the metal piece behind the back seat which connects the 2 rear shock towers. It actually separated at the bottom. The oddest one was at the base of the windshield, lower left corner. Very flexable Coupe Uni-body! Quite a few split welds. The Coupe uni-body is mainy "spot-welded" at the factory, and several were pulled apart mainly around the shock towers. Both floor boards below driver and passengers feet were bowed up slightly.
The Coupe seems to twist along its longatudinal axis. Guess I should of welded in a 6 point cage!

I saved it from a salvage yard back when I had my 86 CGT. Got it for a "spare" incase mine ever died. Find out the part number on the one in question, and email me back. Maybe we can work out a deal. miktip1@hotmail.com

I was gonna suggest a lil' Audi meet over Thanksgiving since I'm gonna be in Nags Head then, but if I remember, that's a bit far for you.
