Especially the one in the tank, that just happened to me, and it turned out to be the in-tank transfer pump. This, unfortunately, was after I had put two external pumps on it because the bad xfer pump killed them, but that's what it was. Disconnect power to the external pump and turn the key to 'on'. You should hear a very quiet fuel pump. If you don't, that's your problem.

What make and model of Audi are you refering to?
4 cylinder?

The fuel pump relay cuts the fuel pump near the engines redline. Often people install the wrong fuel pump relay, and it cuts fuel too early. Or
it gets redlined too often and becomes hyper-sensative.

5cyl and it doesn't always do it...I am thinking a bad plug connector

I just assumed that since the 4k is also CIS that it had two. I'd never looked into mine that deeply since I've never had a problem with the 4k. My bad.

And Audi uses the same K- and KE-Jetronic systems. Maybe their gas tanks are designed differently, and the Audis don't need the transfer pump to feed the main pump. Who knows, that's just a shot in the dark.
