I had to add about two quarts at 6,000 miles. I had the dealer check for leaks but there weren't any. The service guy said that some A4 2.8s seem to burn a bit of oil until 15,000 miles. We'll see, since I'm coming up to 14,000 miles now.

I just keep an eye on the oil now and add a quart every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. I'm going to switch to synthetic oil at 15,000 miles and see what that does.

The car runs great so I'm not really concerned.

I assume that you mean you had to add a quart or less, twice in 10,000+ miles. That's a quart per 5,000 miles. Some people have found that if their car uses a quart in 1,200 or so miles Audi considers it normal and won't do anything for them. (I would consider that level excessive). So your usage rate is actually pretty good. All engines use SOME oil, even if it looks like they don't. (If they don't use any, the cylinder walls aren't being properly lubricated).

Be happy and keep checking your oil level.

I have owned 6 Audis and everyone was an oil burner to some extent, meaning I had to add oil between oil changes. My engines were, 10V 5, 20V 5, 20V Turbo 5, 12V V6, and 2 30V V6s. Hope this helps.

I read the above rule in a recent Road & Track Technical Correspondence column.
