In my V8 Avant. Can someone tell me what is loose and where to look for it? I have the full range of motion at the shifter, but it only grabs 3rd and 4th.

I would do is put the car up on a lift, then look at the shift levers and mechanism going into the trany. Maybe have someone stay in the car, while it is up on the lift, then ask them to move the trany from gear to gear. Watch what movements the linkage is making. Sometime linkage gets bent or disconnected, then you won't get correct gear alignment to engage all the gears. That may be what is happening with your car. Check it out.
