While cooling down my car today, I noticed a "squeek squeek squeek" (oscillating squeek sound) from the rear of the car (I believe the right side). It is not very loud but I could hear it clearly while outside of the vehicle.

After awhile it seemed to stop. I had just driven a short distance to work and I have less than 1/4 tank of gas.

I checked the archives and found a few people describing a similar problem. They thought the problem might be the fuel pump or something do with an injector that is used to balance the fuel level.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm sure this problem will be difficult to reproduce at the dealers.

Yeah, a couple of us have reported hearing this sound but no one seems to have an answer... I agree that it'll probably be very hard to reproduce at dealership, so I don't know how to get it fixed... it'd be nice to at least be able to pinpoint what's causing it... do you also get a pressurized air-pumping sound? That seems to also occur sometimes... anyone else have any ideas?

Here are some possibles:

1) The door locks are vacuum operated so you will hear an air pumping sound when operated - especially if you open/close several times in a row.

2) The gas filler door locking pin squeeks (easily fixed w/ lube) on many A4's when opening/closing. Again, work the remote to see if this is when it occurs.

3) The Quattro models have a U shaped gas tank. When the car is started a pump in the tank starts to move gas in the tank. This is usually noticed as a gurgling noise.

Hope this helps.

Heh, yeah, my car has all those sounds too, but this squeaking sound is something different. ;) It's just a constant creaking sound that repeats about every second for 30 seconds... and the pumping sound sounds like a bicycle pump being pumped very quickly... also seems to last for about 30 seconds.... and of course, it never occurs when you're trying to show it to someone else! Maybe I'll try to record it and playit back to the service guys and see what they think...
