Get all the pieces attached to the air box free (wires, hoses, screws, etc. etc.) as per someone elses instructions (its been a while since I did this one). Once you have this done, insert a putty knife under the rubber sticky crap that holds the box down and free it up all the way around. Once you have this done, use two people with prybars and pry the front of the air box up slowly, a half inch at a time maybe. Loosen it up a bit, jiggling it up and down etc. etc. Once the adhesive is no longer in contact with the connecting point to the air box, disconnect the wires at the end of the motor (if you haven't done this already) and attack the nasty little circlip at the end of the motor (where it comes to a kind of cone shape). Once you have the clip off, lift the box up and prop it on some 2/4s or something similar and you can look in (from the passenger side) and see the motor and the fan that attaches to it. Pull it through the hole/tunnel/whatever you want to call it. The turbine looking part of the motor is pretty flexible and you can bend it a bit to get it out. Insert the new motor in reverse order, and put everything back together.

This was the advice that the guy from Blaufernugen gave me and it worked out a hell of a lot better than having to attack the whole dash.

The air box is pretty durable and you can lift on it pretty hard.

I hope this helps... it defintely CAN be done without taking out the dash.

I did this on my '91 200 20v, but I assume it is the asme/similar setup.
