Have a chance by buy either a '87 5K turbo, auto transmission (rebuilt) with about 110K miles, or an '88 5K Quatro turbo, 5 speed, with about 201K miles. Both about same price. Any thoughts, differences in quality between an '87 and '88?
Thanks,
Moe

I'm sure that the center and rear differentials and drive shafts of a quattro add weight. Approximately how much more than a front wheel drive 5000 does a quattro 5000 weigh?

Also, I find myself frequently crawling along in heavy traffic. Subjectively, how would you rate the clutch pedal force that's required by a 5000TQ? Light / medium / heavy?

Hmm, your own particulars will have to play a large part in the decision making process. Lots O traffic, creaping along, might make an auto tranny beneficial.
If you are driving from A to B on a daily basis, power and control of a 5 speed (as mentioned in another reply) might not make a world of differnce to you.
If you live in a winter environment, you have the Quattro factor to deal with, or not.

I have an 87 Quatto. I drive 40 miles to work, then 40 home. BUT, I don't sit in traffic at all. I drive 90% country backroads, past farms and lakes in central Massachusetts. The 5 speed is great. But, not too long ago I used to commute on Rt 2 and if traffic got bogged up for an accident or weather, the clutch action got annoying (was in my Toyota Corrola then)

It is all about what you can live with. For me, I shun automatic trannies, nothing bad about them really, just not my game.

Do you drive a stick now? If not, try borrowing a car that is stick and driving it to work a couple of days. See what you think.

the 87T w/auto is around 3100 lbs.
You have driven my A4 TQ which is 3241 lbs.
I believe the tranny/clutch are the same or nearly so as the older TQ's, how did the shifting feel in traffic? You may have to come up and try it again as a refresher.

My 5kq has a heavier clutch, brake, and steering than even the CQ. But, you get used to it. I don't realize the difference until I drive the cars back to back.

Thanks for the response. Actually, I prefer a standard also. In fact most of my life I have driven standard shift.
We had an '87 Quattro a number of years back. Loved the car, BUT, was not the most reliable. Was wondering if they made any chages/improvements to the '88's.
Thanks,

you're right on about them being lighter than the type 44. Some people like that feel, maybe I'm just so used to my 5KS.
I have no problem with the stock clutch and shift feel on the A4, it doesn't bother me at all in traffic. Never had the opportunity to drive a manual type 44 to compare, but I'm sure Russ would have no problem in our traffic patterns down here.
