The passenger side accordion boot on the steering rack has a one inch slit in it. So far, I notice no loss of fluid or other manifestation.
This is a rebuilt rack that was installed in 1997 -- about 30,000 miles ago.
At this point, what are my options? What's the best next step?
(Car is naturally aspirated '84 5000S.)
TIA.

My boot's completely ripped off of the passenger side with about 3 or 4 inches of rack exposed. Psh, tear. You guys crack me up. :)

Eventually small grit and dirt (our roadways down here are great for fine sandy particles) will damage the seal and the rack will start leaking.
Check Jason's opinion.

I go through pentosin like I go through gas. I suppose it would be cheaper in the long run to get a new rack.

How about this?
I'll order a steering rack boot, split it, and use ty-raps or cable clamps to fasten it atop the existing boot.
It's certainly not an elegant fix, but it should get me through until the cooler months, when I'll feel ready to tackle the job of R&R'ing the entire rack.
Comments, please?
