The temperature here has dropped close to freezing here. I leave my car in an outdoor parking lot. At the end of the day, cold car, once I start it, I hear a loud whining noise from the front of the car. It is similar to the the sound for the fan from the air conditioning system. Once the car is warm, it disappears.
Anyone have any clues? Appreciate all comments.

Check the FAQs under "engine." There is a discucssion there about a "groan" or "moan" in the engine, and what needs to be done about it. This may be your problem.

My own A4 (1997 1.8T, quattro, manual) has symptoms sort of like those in Don's A4 and those in the FAQ, but not exactly like either. Is it completely impossible that the FAQ might shed some light on Don's problem?

Andy,

I was not trying to offend you! Perhaps it would have been wiser to direct Don to the FAQ and let him decide for himself. Usually, when it starts to get cold out belts seem to squeel a bit until they warm up. My '99 A4 Avant 1.8T QMS did exactly the same thing last winter and I expect, it will happen again.

Just trying to clarify the situation!

Hope this helps,
